Fire In Meh | Q-Pid Feat. Shurwayne Winchester | Slu 2012

I really don't know what to say about this song... especially the shouting segment to start the track! Well let me say something in true Trini style... What de hell is this? I guess this song may be readily accepted in SLU but I don't get the vibe of this song. I have also noticed that Shurwayne Winchester is involved in a lot of fast paced Soca. If you are into speed then this song may appeal to you but I really don't fell this track... I don't feel the heat!
Recently someone said that Soca singers can't sing... well this song has stretched the limits and the singers used a pace for the song with lyrics that makes me feel like this was a shouting match with a fast paced music track to support it... Sorry but that is how I feel about it! I mean I really tried to feel this song and played it over and over again but nothing clicked... damn this is more like a music emergency!

"Beautiful Night" | Skinny Fabulous & Danielle Veira

The following was sent with the music blast for this new music track for Vincy Mas 2012; it is presented here for your listening pleasure:
Mezzo Forte Records (Rankin & Smokes) are proud to present the release of three time soca monarch champion Skinny Fabulous and Danielle Veira's groovy soca duet coined "Beautiful Night".  This fusion of these two extremely talented artists is truly one to be proud off. The prolific energy of Skinny Fabulous combined with the sultry and timeless echo of Danielle Veira lends to a melodic blend that is guaranteed to keep you grooving.

A feel good song needed a feel good riddim, and that's exactly what producers' Rankin & Smokes were filemotivated by during this composition. The riddim termed "Island Dance" fuses techno/dance undertones which are complimented by our melodic and groovy Caribbean pulse. This was further driven by the talented input of master mixologist and engineer Alex Barnwell who truly delivered an impressive final product.

Beautiful Night was an involved project which saw the collaboration of a project team from St.Vincent and St.Lucia. This truly epitomizes what the free movement of Caribbean people is about and a testament to the proper functioning of the CSME.  The song was written by Gamal Doyle and Danielle Veira and recorded by Meggawattz Productions in St.Vincent.

The official release will be available for both local and international markets via digital download on popular entertainment and social websites. The song will be available for sale digitally in foreign markets by Mezzo Forte Records via, ITunes, Amazon music, E- music, Rhapsody and Napster.

Vocals recorded at: Megga Wattz Studio

"On Fire" | Tian Winter | Antigua 2012

This is new music from Antiguan Tian Winter. He has taken the Island Pop plunge and wants to set the World on Fire! I really like Tian Winter's voice and his singing ability. This song is Ok... I don't think that i"On Fire" is  special in any respect but a good change for this soulful Antiguan singer. This song is OK but does not set me on fire even though I  enjoy listening to Tian Winter.

Baltimore/Washington One Caribbean Carnival | No DC!

Tonight on Wack Radio 90.1FM we learnt that Washington DC Carnival will not take place for 2012! However, all is not lost... the Carnival will be merged with the Baltimore Carnival festivities and will now be known as "Baltimore/Washington One Caribbean Carnival". Mr. Desmond of Wack Radio interviewed three persons involved with the DC and Baltimore committees and from that interview we learnt of some of the problems that led to the demise of the DC Carnival. This post is not meant to rehash the issues with the DC Metropolitan officials or the financial difficulties of the DC Carnival committee. Instead this post was done to provide information for those who still want to participate in the Carnival and to provide relevant information to get you to the new venue. It is a new start and one should expect a wonderful and bumper celebration for 2012.

The following information was sourced from dc.about.com.

DC Caribbean Carnival is annual Caribbean style parade and festival designed to encourage cross-cultural programs within the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area community in the expansion of Caribbean culture, and to educate youths and adults in Caribbean arts, crafts and culture. For more than 20 years, the parade has been a popular summer event featuring 30 participating groups representing the Caribbean, Latin America and the Diaspora in colorful costumes portraying different themes, dancing to the sound of Calypso, Soca, Reggae, African, Haitian, Latin and Steelband music.

2012 Update: The DC Caribbean Carnival was in danger of being canceled due to financial issues. The program has been modified to combine with similar events in Baltimore and Bladensburg. See the schedule below.
June 23-24, 2012 - Annual Pan Jam. Crossroads Entertainment Complex, 4103 Baltimore Ave. Bladensburg, Maryland. The event begins at 3 p.m. and features local Steelbands and the Dimanche Gras - the judging of costumes and live entertainment. Admission: $15.00/adult, children 12 years and under $5.00.

July 14 -15, 2012 - Baltimore/Washington One Caribbean Carnival. – The DC Caribbean Carnival will be combined with Baltimore’s celebration. On Saturday July 14, 2012, the Parade starts at Noon at 900 E 33rd Street, travels along Alameda Street to St. Lo Drive. The Festival continues at Lake Clifton Park until 10:00 pm; $10 entrance fee. On Sunday July 15, 2012 the Festival continues from Noon to 9:00 pm featuring entertainment, food and crafts. Admission: $15.00 per person.

"Love Me Carnival" | Problem Child Feat. Patrice Roberts

Patrice Roberts has established herself as the Female Voice for Vincy Carnival 2012. No doubt about that! She is, by far, better than the rest! This is not difficult to say here today so here goes... Sorry Zoelah | Fya Empress!

Patrice said "it's just a wine, just a little wine, ain't no harm in that" when she sang on the Spanish Fly Riddim for Vincy Mas 2012 ("Just A Little Wine" | Spanish Fly Riddim). Today we have another track released for Vincy Mas. This one features 'Problem Child' with featured singer Patrice Roberts. This second track has sent rumors flying on the Web. What is going on with Patrice and Problem Child? Is it simply a musical collaboration or is there more to it?

Well whatever is going on one thing that we know is that the music is good. Not only in the music good but Patrice has established herself as the new female voice for Vincy Mas 2012. Having said that some people have even gone as far as saying that she grew up in Toco, Trinidad but is  really a Vincy child. Well does any of that matter? Hell no! What really matters is that Trinidadian Patrice Roberts of the HD crew is ruling the vibes of Vincy land... the best female voice and vibes for a female artist whether as a solo female singer or in a collaboration. Kudos to the new female voice of Vincy Mas!

Oh, and by the way, the song is sweet... Well done Gamal Doyle (Problem Child), writer and singer for this track!

"Hell of A Night" | Terri Lyons

Watch out World because here comes Miss Terri Lyons, the lady who gave us that beautiful song "Smile" with Ataklan. This one caters for those who love techno fusion music and should do well on the European circuit. THis is the kind of music that rocks night clubs and those huge DJ run stadium music fests in Europe. Terri has a very beautiful voice amd has begun to spread her wings by doing this techno track (Island Poppish) that takes her away from the Soca that we love so much. However, one cannot say that this is not our music; Terri has made it our music! Watch out World because here comes Terri!

"Butterflies" | Springs | Vybz Evolution! | Grenada 2012

This is new music released for Greenz Carnival 2012. Oh, in case you did not know, Greenz is the isle of Spice better known as Grenada! The song Butterflies is a  winner! So why is this song a winner? Well it has a sweet groovy riddim and is very dancable. What I like most of all is that it is a song that does not deal with rags, flags or wining! This is not the norm of Soca music and as a result this song gets major points of good lyrics. The singer does a very good job and the production is excellent! Kudos for a job well done!

Bio:
Kevon ‘Springs’ Alexander was born in Trinidad in a small village called Laventille. While growing up he was exposed to the musical expertise of his father and grew to have the same burning passion for music. With the help of his mother at the tender age of 3, he started singing and dancing in school plays and concerts. After graduating from high school he migrated to Brooklyn NY and decided to pick up the keyboard (piano) to increase his musical talents. After a few months of being self-taught he started writing and composing his own songs then, later joined “The Request Band” as a keyboard player. During that time he performed in shows with some of the top artistes in the music business such as Beenie Man, Capleton, Mr. Vegas, Keith Murray and Juvenile just to name a few. Kevon then left Request Band after a few years and with the help of Thishawn “Bossman” Adams started “Trinology Ent.” His own musical production team. Currently he is a member of “Vybz Evolution” which is a new rising band where he sings and plays keyboards. Kevon is currently working on some of his singles and the sound of this rising, Brash and Brilliant young musician is poised to sweep the music world with his talents by singing, writing and producing his own music. ..

The following notes were sourced from the official release for Go Down from the music site Jam2Vibes:

Mixpak presents Dre Skull's new Loudspeaker Riddim with voicings from Beenie Man, Popcaan, Natalie Storm, and Machel Montano.

Normally found voicing the upper echelons of bpm, Soca Monarch Machel Montano makes a rare appearance on a dancehall riddim, keeping his energy intact for an expressive tune dedicated to winery -- "Go Down."

"Realest Hero" | Problem Child | Vincy Mas 2012

Yes I! This is the trademark sound of the one and only Vincy Bad Boy Problem Child. I saw the posting of this song on islandmix and was very surprised that the reception was only lukewarm. The song is an action song that features Bunji Garlin. It is fast paces and action packed but the response has not been what I expected for such a 'hard hitting song'. I guess not every thinks that the Vincy Bad Boy is 'baddah' that most of the action heroes mentioned in the song. I guess to each his own... this is your opportunity to voice your opinion!

So what do you think? Is is worthy or just another one that will be quickly forgotten?

"10,000 Strong" | Skinny Fabulous | Vincy Mas 2012

Ten Thousand Strong (10000 Strong) is the latest release by the very busy Gamal Doyle better known as Skinny Fabulous - Mr. Duracell! This song was released over the past weekend and was the song of choice for fetes that took place as stated on Hot 97.1 (the number one radio station on St.Vincent). This song is not the traditional Vincy Soca that we are used to hearing and has the vibe and pattern of music that came out of the Trinidad Carnival experience for 2012.

This one was not labeled Ragga Soca (typical of Vincy music releases) but simply as Vincy Soca. However, if you listen to the music you can easily call this one a fusion track in the vein of a Power Soca/Island Pop feel (and if you listen well a tinge of Bunji Garlin). Of course this is all in my my World of thinking but anyone who knows will realize that Trinidad leads and everyone else follows!

Now take a listen to the song and give us some feed back about the track. Do you like the music, is it Soca or do you think that Skinny Fabulous wrote a chart topper that would take the road march in Vincy land or just take control of the fetes for Vincy Carnival 2012?  Well if you don't want to say much simply give some feed back regarding the vibe you get from this track.

Rocksteady music Pioneer | Nerlin 'Lynn' Taitt

Nerlin 'Lynn' Taitt, the Trinidadian guitarist many musicologists credit with the birth of rocksteady music; Mr. Taitt passed on to the great beyond on Wednesday 30th January, 2010 in Montreal, Canada. Rock Steady is considered the base from which reggae music was developed. One can make the comparison to Calypso and Soca with Soca coming from the belly of the Calypso World, as conceived and created by Garfield Blackman aka Lord Shorty. Lynn Taitt is considered the pioneer of Rocksteady music... the cradle of Reggae music!

The following excerpt was sourced from the Jamaican Gleaner Newspaper article that was published on 01/23/2010.
"Taitt, who was born in Trinidad's San Fernando region, emigrated to Canada in 1968. He first came to Jamaica in August 1963 as a musician to play in celebrations to mark Jamaica's first year of Independence from Britain.

He became a regular session player in Jamaica during the ska era, recording with the genre's biggest acts including The Skatalites and Derrick Morgan.

But it was the rocksteady sound that Taitt is most associated. He perfected that beat by playing in influential bands such as The Cavaliers, Comets and The Jets, which was the most prolific.

His band-mates in The Jets included guitarist Lynford 'Hux' Brown, keyboardists Gladstone Anderson and Winston Wright and saxophonist Headley Bennett.

Among the many hits Taitt played on was Take It Easy by Hopeton Lewis, which many argue is the first rocksteady song. He also worked on Girl I've Got a Date by Alton Ellis.

Taitt recorded with Jamaica's biggest producers of the 1960s, including arch-rivals Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd and Arthur 'Duke' Reid, Bunny Lee, Sonia Pottinger and Leslie Kong.

Some of Taitt's most appreciated work was done with Kong, a Chinese-Jamaican who was the first person to record Bob Marley. Taitt played on most hit songs by singer Desmond Dekker, Kong's star act.

His jangly opening riffs helped make Dekker's 007 (Shantytown) a classic. Taitt also recorded several songs with African-American impresario Danny Sims and singer Johnny Nash.

In the 1970s, Taitt was part of a colony of rocksteady musicians living in Toronto. Others included Leroy Sibbles of The Heptones, and keyboardist Jackie Mittoo who Taitt worked with in The Skatalites."

The photo presented with this post also came from the article published by the Jamaican Gleaner newspaper. The article was written by Howard Campbell.

The following quote was sourced from Silhouettes Website.
"Taitt credited the jerky rock steady reggae beat to Shango Baptiste African Religious Music he heard in south Trinidad, but his musical adoption was not accepted because calypso was too strong."

10 Riddim Mixes From Trinidad Carnival 2012 | Madderific!

I have been listening to the new music released for several upcoming carnivals in the region and heard  about two riddims that I liked. However, I can't seem to find a riddim to do damage to the music released out of Trinidad for carnival 2012. As a result I have posted a few of the 'riddims' from my list for Trinidad & Tobago Carnival 2012. If you liked a 'riddim' and did not see it here leave a comment and I will add it. I did not choose them because personally liked them but simply picked these based on comments seen online. Listen to the Mixes and tell me what you think... I will also post the new riddim mixes coming from the rest of island but just take a listen to these once again.

I have already posted new music releases from St. Vincent carnival and some of the other islands but not the riddim mixes. Take a listen, once again, and appreciate how good our music is this year!

"J'ouvert Morning" | Teddyson John | SLU 2012

J'ouvert is the start of Carnival and this song is the start point for niceness on the Magaroze riddim. I pick this song by Teddyson John as my favorite track on the Magaroze riddim. Yes, I enjoyed the release by KES on this riddim but this one takes it as far as I am concerned. Teddyson T.J. John takes the prize for best flow on this riddim.  Just follow Teddyson's instruction and jump up in the j'ouvert and you will have the time of your life... I love this song!

Oh, and Teddyson is a son of the Lucian soil and is getting on bad and mad for this upcoming festival in St. Lucia. This one will definitely be a favorite in the St. Lucian fetes and should do well elsewhere. However, I do believe because KES is better known outside the Caribbean region  that the song by KES will do better outside of the region (North America). I will a fan of this song, it has the right pace and is on track to be one of the best for 2012.

"Your Body Working" | KES | Magaroze Riddim SLU 2012

This is KES on the Magaroze riddim and it is a very sweet dance track. Kes and his band are doing their thing on this riddim. This song will be a hit for the Lucian Carnival and I have a good feeling that it will mash up the North American Carnivals later this year. I really enjoyed Trinidad's music this year and this music coming out of St. Lucia seems to be a continuation of the vibes coming out of Trinidad.

For some reason I get a good feeling about St. Lucia's music and it feels like music that you would hear in Trinidad unlike music from Vincy land. There is a really good connection that exists between St. Lucia and Trinidad. This song by KES, the band, is very good but there is one that just tops it on the riddim. That song comes in the next post. For now just enjoy the music of KES for St. Lucia' Carnival 2012!

"A.T.A.O. Engoma" | Benjai | Magaroze Riddim SLU 2012

This is Benjai for St. Lucia Carnival 2012. Now when you hear about riddims being released you may say 'yeah right' they are all the same and most of the time you may be correct; however, that is not the case for this Riddim.
Of all the songs on this riddim this song by Benjai has a totally different feel and is somewhat different from the work he did for Carnival 2012 in Trinidad. This is one you will have to get a feel for but I like it all the same.

Benjai is a unique talent and this song does not sound like it came from the Caribbean region (I am serious). This does not have the typical Caribbean sound that we hear from the traditional carnival venues around the region. The Lucians have done something special with this riddim and I really like it. Every song on the riddim has a unique feel and this one riddim surpasses anything released for Vincy Carnival. I am so serious when I say this. To be honest it keeps getting better and tonight I am releasing giving exposure on this blog to three songs from the riddim for your listening pleasure. This one from Benjai is the first of three. Enjoy the music and celebrate the Lucian vibes!

"All I Ask" - Tian Winter [Sugah Dumplin Riddim] | Antigua 2012

You can run but you can't hide from the fact that this is the sweetest song on this riddim. This is a Production of Victorious but Tian is not moving far from the South Trinidad team at Precision Productions.
This young man from Antigua can sing with the best that the Caribbean has to offer... he has a very sweet sounding voice and should be singing R&B music! However, home is where the heart is and he loves his Soca music. This is not jump up music but music to move and groove with someone special. It is the very best of what we call Groovy Soca music. This is the type of track that will get rotation of radio stations long after the carnival is over. I love to hear this guy sing... Tian is one of the best in the Caribbean basin!

I had to do a double take when this song started... shades of CosmicShift immediately came to mind. The start of the song took me back to that sweet Bunji Garlin track aka Cosmic Shift but it was just the start.

"Suga" - Ricardo Drue [Sugah Dumplin Riddim] | Antigua 2012

This one is from the 'Local Foreigner' better known as Ricardo Drue. The name of the song is "Suga" and has a sweet flow to it... This one is on the Sugah Dumplin Riddim that was done by Victorious but mixed and mastered by Mastermind Productions out of Trinidad. As a matter of fact Drue, a born Antiguan, grew up in Trinidad and has Trini roots imprinted on his music. Drue now calls Miami, U.S.A his home but when it comes to his music roots Trinidad is the place he calls home. From Drue you will get a Trini Vibe from his music.
This riddim is a Groovy Soca Riddim and one that you will enjoy listening to at home, on the road on in a fete! Enjoy the sweet voice or Ricardo Drue... new music released for Antigua Carnival 2012

"Badda Dan You" - Drastic [Sugah Dumplin Riddim] | Antigua 2012

There are three songs on this "Sugah Dumplin Riddim" but this one is the one that comes to the point... it is a groovy tract but sounds a little more uptemp than the other two tracks on the riddim. Drastic did his thing and should get deserved airplay for his efforts on this track.

"Badda Dan You" - Drastic [Sugah Dumplin Riddim] | Antigua Carnival 2012.... This is new music from Victorious Productions. This 'Riddim' will surely go down well with the feting crews. It is on the Groovy side of Soca and should go down well for the season. This riddim is one of the better ones to be released for upcoming carnival celebrations 'Up De Islands'!

"Bottle Of Rum" (Official Music Video) | Machel Montano

The message is crystal clear... Don't drink alcoholic beverages and drive a vehicle... tragedy will most likely be the outcome!

Rum stories, especially a love song about rum, are not what is needed today... that is the wrong message to send. However, Machel's song and the message of the video have turned the tide. This video sends the right message... designate a drive if you are going out to party and will be drinking to the point where you don't have control of your senses. Drinking and driving don't mix. So when you are mixing your drinks designate a driver.

This is a well made video with the right message... Precision productions created a superb riddim and even though I don't think that this song is the best on the riddim I have to give Machel Kudos for his superb singing and a video with a much needed message. Enjoy the video and the music!

"Calypso Music" | David Michael Rudder

The entire Caribbean region has been drawn to the rhythms of sweet Soca music... a music that was born in Trinidad and Tobago. The music called Soca was created by Garfield Blackman aka Lord Shorty aka Ras Shorty I. He developed Soca because Calypso was on the decline and the young people were more into Reggae, Dancehall and American R&B Music. However, there is a resurgence of Calypso music with 2012 giving rise to some really good music especially for the steel pan competition better known as Panorama in Trinidad and Tobago. We must not forget that there was a time when Calypso music was king and one King David Rudder was the man who had people chipping to music with a joy that we now reminisce about in today's post. This is Calypso music - Enjoy this classic!

The song Calypso music is a classic and David Rudder reminds us that regardless of how much you may love Soca music that the well from which it all came from is Calypso music. Listen to this classic song and enjoy the moment... reminisce in wondermazement!

Trinidad Music 2012 | Nothing to match it in the region!

Two Songs, Two Singers, One Male, One Female, One Riddim... a precision strike! Can anything from Vincy-land match them? That is the challenge!

I am a man of conviction... I am a man who loves music and I am here to testify that Trinidad's Carnival 2012 produced the best music in the Caribbean to date. There has been so much talk about the Vincy music releases and that Vincy will mash up the region...they have failed to date. Islandmix mix is alight with new music releases from upcoming carnivals in the region. Music from all over, song after song and I am still waiting for music to move me ... I am not impressed at all.

Well since I am here talking and I am sure that people will be upset and say it is all talk... here is the deal. I am going to post two songs, sung by two different singers, one male and the other female on the same riddim and if anyone can match them leave your comments for posting here on this blog.

I am going to surprise everyone and not post songs by any of the singers you expect to see here. I am not going with the big names... check out my picks!

The music releases I am hearing can't match these songs with music and most importantly please note that the songs I am posting have people who can sing... I mean they are singing sweetly...not shouting and have a beautiful flow with the music. Of course the singers are great but it is the creativity of Kasey Phillips at Precision Productions that made it all happen... Thank you Precision Productions....

Soca | Yesterday and Today! | Trademark Lord Shorty

Here is a little musical exercise to tease your brain. Take a listen to the two songs presented in this post. One is from 1973 by Lord Shorty and is titled Indrani. Yes it is that song, the song that started the fusion of Calypso and East Indian rhythms by the late Lord Shorty.  Now the second song is a very recent song that was done by Vincy/Trini Zoelah. In St. Vincent they call this music Ragga Soca and in Trinidad we call it Groovy Soca. However, that is not what this post is about. I am way past the contention of Trini  Groovy Soca and Vincy Ragga Soca. This post is about the rhythmic structure of both music tracks. Listen to the rhythms of both songs and give me some feed back regarding what you hear. The base rhythms of both songs, in my humble opinion, are the same! Yes I said they are the same!

So what do I hope to achieve by this.. well I did not come up with this idea but I am part of the discussion and would like to ensure that this is made known to all. On islandmix.com Lord Shorty's name has been dragged through the mud by people from the islands up the Caribbean chain. The main dissidents come from St. Vincent, Dominica and Guyana. Now when Soca music became known the only person to lay claim to the music was Lord Shorty. He named it Sokah and Ivor Ferreira of the Trinidad press mistakenly spelt it as Soca! Nobody cared much about Soca in the beginning but that is not the case today. Lord Shorty even talked about how he created the new music on several recorded programs that can be seen on YouTube. No one else has done that but a few have quietly laid claim to creating the music but cannot provide the information that Lord Shorty did. Swaggerific from islandmix posted the two songs and pointed out the similarities in the rhythms. Why is that important? Well Indrani was the beginning of Soca. However, there was resentment in Trinidad by both African and East Indian communities that caused Lord Shorty to remove the Indian instruments from the music but he kept the accent of the Indian rhythms in the music. That change in the concept brought about the album  he named  Endless Vibrations. The soca you know today... need I say more? Both songs presented below have the same rhythmic patterns... and it is all good... it is Soca music then and now!

New Bajan Music Releases | Crop Over 2012

Many were wondering ... what is going on with the Bajan Crop Over Festival releases? Well don't panic because here they come! Islandmix is the site that brought the latest released for your listening pleasure. Julien has uploaded a play list of songs and they are presented here for your listening pleasure.
Some have said that the Bajan experience is not the same. Some have said that Bajan Soca has slipped. There was a time when Bajan Soca rivaled Trinidad position as Soca capital of the World but that is not the case today. Now that we have songs for Crop Over 2012 you have the opportunity to recalibrate and vote for your favorite songs in the region. Do you think that the Bajans have slipped, gotten better or the music is not up to standard? Please share your thoughts with us.

"Bodyguard" | Alpha | Lucian Carnival 2012

This song was released for St. Lucia Carnival 2012 (SLU 2012). This is one of the better songs that I have heard coming from the other festivals planned to take place later this year. I heard music from Grenada, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and of course St. Lucia but this is the first song that really caught my attention. It has a really nice flow and a Groovy Soca tempo to the music.  This reviews and comments have been good for this song and should improve and people get to know the track.

The singer does a really good job of accompanying the music. Everything feel right about this song. The producers and singers did a very good job. I expect that this song should be a hit in most of the Caribbean carnivals planned to take place later this year. One of the very cool thing to take note of with this song is that it is over four minutes long (actually 4:23) when most of the songs released for this season are usually around three minutes long. This means that if you like the song you will not be short changed and get a really good wine with this one. Thumbs Up to the producers and sing on this track!
