"El Cohete De" | Mr. Renzo on the Cosmic Riddim!

Did someone say Cosmic Riddim... hell yes! This is the Riddim that Bunji Garlin set ablaze with his song titled "Cosmic Riddim". This is the Renzo take on the riddim and it is geared to those who understand Spanish and also for those who love Soca. The riddim is easy to discern but the Spanish could be a problem but the music will not be an issue and you can groove to the español take on the riddim. Did someone say "Soca Rocket Ship"? Yes this is the same song but just that it has now been released in 100% Spanish. This version of the Soca Rocket Ship (El Cohete De/The Rocket) is geared for the Latin market.

Mr. Renzo grew up in Arouca Trinidad and has been releasing his soca tracks to the delight of his following. We are yet to learn how well the music is doing in the land of his birth - Venezuela! However, we know that it is only a matter of time that he sets the place on fire with his infectious rhythms and Latin style singing!

"Love is the only thing we need" | sheldonblackm&soulrebels

From the Trinidad Guardian Newspaper: Written by Gillian Moore 01/16/2012. The Soul Rebels are fantastic... listen for the female vocalist on the featured song, "Love is the only thing we need".
"Oslo-based musician Sheldon Blackman treated his old T&T fans to a taste of new music last Thursday, when he performed for patrons at MovieTowne’s Fiesta Plaza, with his band, the Soul Rebels. Blackman, with eight band members, lit up the stage with his characteristic brand of jamoo, in a set of songs off his new album, Hope. Hope is Blackman’s fourth album, but his first with his group of Norwegian bandmates, with whom he has been playing for two years. He said it was their first time performing in T&T, adding that it was a blessing to be back home.

The Afro Caribbean music revealed influences including calypso, rapso, soca, reggae, gospelypso and rock. Lyrics, melody and rhythm joined with an uplifting message, delivered by Blackman in his characteristic warm and outgoing fashion. Band members included Jorn “Jam” Hansen, lead guitar; William Pedersen Stavic, bass; Jon Eeg Henriksen, percussion; Thomas Dulsrud, drums; Sara Osmundsen and Mimi Tamba, background vocals; Clifton Harrydass on pan and Jerel De Leon on keys; with Blackman on vocals and rhythm guitar. The set started off with Steel Band Oi, a pan calypso with a sweet, retro feel, before Reach For the Sky (Mama Africa), which Blackman said was dedicated to last year’s UN observance of the Year for People of African Descent.

The set included Good Things, Ocean and Fret Not, a song which Blackman said his musical family often sang together. He called family members up from the audience. Brothers Eldon and Isaac, sisters Nehilet and Abbi, as well as mom Claudette joined in and sang along. Next, Blackman performed Love Is the Only Thing We Need, a sweet melodic number to which the crowd sang along. The band even threw in a chorus in Norwegian. Stop the War, with its feel-good message and reggae drop followed, before Lonely, a balad, beautiful and bittersweet. They performed Steel Band Oi one more time, with its rousing call and response, before Blackman thanked the audience and all who had helped make the Soul Rebels' appearance possible."

I am thankful to Sheldon Blackman for the uploading of the music to Sound Cloud. Today I present the song that I fell in love with when they performed it live on Wack Radio 90.1 FM located on Coffee Street San Fernando, Trinidad. This is a love song... a song of love for people! Listen to the message in the music. This is a classic song filled with love for the person next to you and especially for those whom have strayed from  the path of love for his/her fellowman!

"Ride D Thing Boy" | Tamisha Nicholls & Zoelah

"Ride D Thing Boy" is a new song released for Vincy Carnival 2012. I have already seen people making references to the song as a hit! Amare Triniboi of islandmix.com said that 'tune is definitely a hit... releasing Monday".
Everyone is excited about the new music releases and immediately consider the songs hits even before they (new songs) are played on the radio stations! A song is a hit when it get serious rotation and the people are demanding it! Is that the case with this song? Absolutely not! I guess we are all entitled to our opinions but this song needs work!

Now I listened to the song and the first thing I noticed is that the music does not sound like a 'finished product'. What do I mean? Well to be honest it sounds mediocre! The vocals on the track are also annoying. What is going on with Zoelah? Why does she feel that she has to, as someone using the avatar name of Pusha said, "Zoelah needs to stop over singing... not feeling the music". Hello, didn't I say that?

Music is subjective, of course we know that, but then again there has to be something about the music that appeals to the public to make it a hit. This song has a good hook in "wine on it" especially since we have ladies encouraging the guys to 'wine on it" but something is not right with the music and the pitch of the voices especially Zoelah's. I wrote recently that it sounds like Zoelah is racing down the music when I listened to another track she sung.

Now everyone else has the opportunity to listen to the song... voice your opinions. If you like it say so if not just leave a comment. This is not about disliking the artists it is all about the song. I simply think that it still needs work and should not have been released yet. As far as I am concerned this is an unfinished product. Please advise the singers to send the song to Kasey Phillips of Precision Productions at KMP Music labs to get it  done right!

Kernel Roberts on Pump Yuh Flag | Foolish Statements!

“I knew I had a shit song but I knew my shit song had the resources to make it. It had real shit out there but my shit was better than all the rest. Plus I had the best jockey on the planet in Machel”.

Reading this just gets me upset... Why couldn't he enjoy the success they achieved and keep his mouth shut! It says a lot about how gullible these artists and producers think the audience they push this 'shit' on are and that which they believe a naive audience will accept! Write and produce quality lyrics and don't depend on 'the resources to make it'. No one should aspire to be mediocre and if he knew he had a 'shit' song he should have worked his tail off to ensure he produced something that in years to come would be talked about as a classic... not a shit song!

“In the last seven years, I won five road marches. My father had 10. We going to match that and beat that. I am not bowing out. I really want someone to beat me cause that will mean the standard has improved. We are not bowing out on excellence,” he said, critical of those who believe Montano should not compete in Soca Monarch. On that topic, Roberts had a tongue lashing for all the artistes who, he said, ganged up against Montano this year. “The whole industry united we stand against Machel. Allyuh wasting time teaming up to destroy Boy. He will always succeed and he is constantly and consistently cutting allyuh ass. Trinis not stupid and God don’t like ugly and that is how Machel does win back the public by not taking them on and working the hell out of his songs.” His friendship with the 2012 triple crown winner is, he said, based on their many similarities. They both play hard and work hard, often going days without sleep in the studio.

If Kernel and the HD team adopt the attitude that any 'shit' song can and will be accepted then I don't see him (Kernel) achieving those lofty goals (achieved by his father Lord Kitchener) after revealing his feelings about Pump Yuh Flag; and moving forward by pushing a 'shit song' for the public simply because of this invincible attitude. It does not matter how many road marches Kernal wins with Machel as his singer... he is not the singer! Lord Kitchener wrote, sang and mesmerized his generation with his talent. Kernal can't drop crap and then beat his chest and brag that "we are going to match and beat that". He should be in awe of his father's achievements and state that it would be a difficult to emulate the accomplishments of the great Lord Kitchener!

“We share the same passion for music and the industry and we real intelligent alike.”

Wonderful... I am pleased to hear that they share a passion for music and especially the Soca music industry. However, I am appalled that they can get away with such brazen and distasteful statements and the public has no reaction. On islandmix.com Trinidadian music is constantly attacked as being sub-standard... Kernel's remarks will only give these detractors ammunition to say... "see I told you so!"
This year the standard of music was excellent and the Groovy Soca tracks excelled. It is true that the Power Soca category (Pump Yuh Flag category) was no where near the quality of the Groovy Soca releases however, it is counter productive to shoot yourself in the foot. I guess Kernel Roberts had a passion to see if a 'shit song' (his words) could win it all. I guess he wanted to see if the public was naive enough to accept a sub-standard song. I guess he wanted to know how well marketing could work to accomplish their lofty goals. I guess, in the end, Machel's ability as a singer and performer as well as the genius of the marketing team achieved the goal of promoting 'Pump Yuh Flag' as the song to beat! They convinced the band leaders that "Pump Yuh Flag" is the song for the road and they all followed like sheep led to the slaughter house. Fayann's song (Miss Behave) was and still is better than "Pump Yuh Flag". Kernel Roberts said Pump Yuh Flag is shit so who am I to disagree. I am just upset that he was dumb enough to say that it was just crap!

"Jazzalypso" | Élan Parlé Calypso Jazz Fusion Band

I was surprised to see that Élan Parlé had released their album Jazzalypso free for download on Sound Cloud. Well they even provided the embed code for blogs and I am pleased to provided the tracks for your listening pleasure on Trinizagada.

Ming’s view on the idea of giving away the music free to anyone to listen and download is that hopefully, "they will share it with friends, who will in turn share it with their friends and so on".

Best New Song Auditions | Vincy Mas 2012

The following article was sourced from the website vincyview.com and was published on April 17, 2012 regarding the "Best New Song" competition. The only question I have for this is how are they going to judge the best new song when it encompasses both the Calypsonians and Soca artists? The best new song will come from a pool of Calypso, Power Soca and Ragga Soca songs... it should be an interesting decision! I would like to know the criteria that they are going to use to determine the 'Best New Song for Carnival 2012.

"Auditions for Calypsonians and Soca Artistes participating in this year’s “Best New Song” competition organized by the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC) will take place today.

A release from the CDC says registration forms must be accompanied by a copy of the song on a CD, which should be ready for airplay.

The “Best New Song” competition, forms part of the official opening of Vincy Mas which is scheduled for Saturday May 5Th."

If anyone can provide information regarding the format of the competition and the criteria that the judging panel is going to use to determine the best new song then please leave a comment via the comment feature for this posting.

"Calypsonians on Soca" | What the Music was all about!

Here is a very interesting documentary on Soca music that takes a look at the past and brings you to a time when the society was changing in the Caribbean region. The thoughts of artistes like David Rudder, Arrow, Lord Shorty, a very young Machel Montano, record producer Joe Brown and the great Terror shed light on the music and a period that most of us wish we could relive once again. Listen attentively as they express their views about the "ultimate dance music" known as Soca - the music we love so much today.

After watching the video and listening to David Rudder voice his opinions, one has to reflect and think about the music called Soca today and the period that the music was embedded into our hearts and minds. Indeed we love the beat but the soul and pride that were once the hallmark of the music have now been replaced by lyrics that generally encouraged wining and jamming and flag waving. Nothing is hidden today and one can easy see that the recording standards have come a long way but the lyrical content has suffered tremendously; we have regressed and our standards have taken a hit because everyone wants to get that one hit to feel that they have succeeded in this very competitive Soca music industry. We can only hope that the writers pay attention to lyrical content and not simply be drawn to getting a hook to lure the young people to 'get on bad' on Carnival day. In other words they need to look back and learn from the Calypsonians of the past who ensured that the lyrics were the driving force and not the music. If they can bring both together then  you would revive the strength, love and spirit that  David Michael Rudder so consciously embedded in his songs!

We need to move forward with songs that bring positive vibes and build on the standards set by David Rudder and later on Ras Shorty I. We can't allow the soul of the music to lost because of the drive to have a hit song! There is always hope and we cannot lose sight of this fact. Everyone needs to play their part and the people who support these artists should not settle for mediocrity but demand  better lyrical content from the artistes they love and support today.

Credit "Socapineman" for bringing this video to our attention on islandmix.com. It is my hope that the posting of the video brings about 'healthy discussions' and not deteriorate into territorial disputes as have many prior discussions on that Caribbean forum.

There is one last thing that I want to state before closing this post... there have been so many discussions on islandmix regarding the role of Lord Shorty and the 'cultural influences that affected the outcome of the genre' and the doubters have continued their assault time and again. What am I talking about? Well Lord Shorty clearly stated that he incorporated Trinidad's Indian musical rhythms/instruments to shape the new music and many have continually denied this fact. This documentary and the statements of David Michael Rudder surely puts it in perspective... now let's see them debunk David Rudder!

"Spanish Fly Riddim" | Frykton Music | Vincy 2012

This new 'Riddim' was sent via Julian Promos for your listening pleasure. It is the latest release for Vincy-Mas 2012. I will say this I was curious when I saw the name of Patrice Roberts on the 'Riddim' and then again I noticed that the tracks were Mixed and Mastered by Precision Productions at KMP Music Studio in Palmiste, Trinidad.
I had plans to post some other songs tonight but then again these four songs must come before the others. These tracks are the latest and guess what the music is far advanced to that which I have heard to date. I recently stated that the Anthem production is the best that I have heard to date.. guess what, these songs are not my favorite songs for St. Vincent Carnival 2012.

Good things happen when we come together and pool our creative juices. This is not the case on islandmix.com.Soca where we have 'Vincy vs Trini' misguided conversations (I am part of the nonsense but so be it). The music on this 'Riddim' shows what we should all be about and that is Caribbean cooperation and integration. We have Patrice Roberts out of Trinidad, Problem Child and Danielle Vierra aka Daneel from Vincy-land and Ricardo Drue via Antigua/Trinidad (Drue was born in Antigua but nurtured in Trinidad before leaving to live in Miami).

These songs will go down well with Trinidadians because it is more in line with the style of Soca that was heard for Trinidad Carnival and if you listen to Patrice and Drue you will get that same vibe we had for Trini Carnival 2012. Fryktion music ... we like! After listening to the tracks you will have your favorite of course and it may come down to a territorial decision or simply because you have a  favorite artiste singing on the riddim. Having said that I honestly believe that Patrice's song is the best on this Riddim! What is your opinion?

"WineN" | Skarpyon | Vincy Carnival 2012

This is one of the latest releases out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and it comes from Vincy 'Ragga Soca Champion' Skarpyon. The title of the track is 'WineN' and it created a mini 'this is the best thing for Vincy 2012' on islandmix until the next new release came.

Skarpyon is a favorite son of the soil in Vincy land and this song should do well for the upcoming festival. We wish him will!

The song has a dancehall feel to it (try Buju)n  and falls in the Vincy Ragga Soca category of music. I don't know if he will use this track to defend his Ragga Soca title but he has received good reviews from his fan base to date. It should be an interesting competition indeed. This song is Ragga Soca but the rest competing for the crown may just be Groovy Soca songs. Does this give him an unfair advantage? Nope, because what we call Groovy Soca in Trinidad is Ragga Soca in St. Vincent.

"Do Yuh Ting" | Coxilus | Greenz 2012

This is new music from the Spice Isle for Greenz Carnival 2012. The name of the track is Do Yuh Ting and the singer is Coxilus.
"Chevon Cox is a Grenadian singer and songwriter with a style that hovers between Soca and Reggae. Better known by his stage name Coxilus, he first came onto the scene in 2004 with his Soca hit, ‘What We Eatin’. Gradually he gained a larger fan base through performances at the Grand Anse Beach Festival and Spice Up the Carenage Shows. His latest Soca track for 2012 is entitled “Do Yuh Ting.”  via http://keepinbeat.com/

I am very confident that you would like this track. It is not the typical Carnival music track that you may have come to expect from most Caribbean artists. There is something about the song that is appealing. The music flows nicely but the song is still stuck in the wining themes of most Carnival music. Having said that I still believe that this is one that you would like.

This is a party shaker coming out of St. Vincent for Vincy Mas 2012. The music has a nice flow to it and I especially like the page they took from Bunji Garlin with the "Tun Up" chant to start the track. The song features Mack, Syxx, DJ 20 & Shaney Hypex.
This is the first song coming out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for Vincy Mas 2012 that I can say I like. I have posted a few tracks released for Vincy Mas but was not impressed by any however, this one has the markings of a 'party/fete rocker - First worthy Vincy 2012 track!

Vincy Trini Fya Empress is all about Bam Bam Talk with this track. Lornette Nedd Reid is her real name and she is married to Tobagonian David Reid. Together they formed the band Fire Fusion way back in 2001. She is looking forward to a successful Vincy Carnival (her homeland) and hopes to do well with her new release. This song is all about what a rolling bam bam can do for men who love talking bam bams (buttocks for non Caribbean people looking in) Look out for Lornette Nedd Reid aka Fya Empress! Shades of Shurwayne Winchester in this song!

"Waist is Fuh Wining" | Tricia Alleyne

I heard this song on islandmix.com and liked 'the flow' of the song. There is a synergy between the vocals and music that makes this a very likable groovy track. The band accompanying Tricia, Angels Caribbean Band, is from South Ozone Park, Queens, NYC. The song is very relaxed and has a nice bounce to it. I have to say that this is the most relaxed groovy track that I have heard this year.

If you listen to the track you will surely play it again. The song is on the 'Lemongrass Rhythm' and is a presentation of Angels Caribbean Records & KKR.

"Girl Power Riddim" | Island Pop Music | Vincy Carnival 2012

Here we go with some new music coming out of Vincy land for their upcoming Carnival, 2012. I will say this immediately... I am not excited about this collection of songs. Maybe when you listen you will have a song that you like but nothing has caused me to call anyone to get these songs.
I always try to be fair to artists but lately I am looking at music coming out of St. Vincent a little differently because of one individual on islandmix who uses the name VP. I think that the music producers and singers out of St. Vincent should put a lid on this guy. He is doing more harm than good.

I remember when songs started coming out of Trinidad for Carnival 2012 I liked some but did not like a lot of them. I did find that the quality of music for Trinidad's carnival 2012 was better this time around compared to the previous year. Do you think that anything coming out of Vincy is 'not good' for this guy? Hell no... everything is gold! Maybe this post has already been derailed because my focus is elsewhere but as I always say... the music tells its own story!

In Trinidad, we had the emergence of Island Pop as conceived by Madmen Productions... I am not talking about music of the same name from Sean Kingston. The Island Pop out of Trinidad is  Techno fusion with an emphasis on Soca. Well what do we have with this Girl Power Riddim? They call it Island Pop Music and it is more in line with Madmen Productions music out of Trinidad. Now we have the Vincy producers taking a page from Madmen and creating a package with five female vocalists to start (more to come) using the Island Pop theme. I listened to the music and I haven't been rocked by the singers. My honest opinion is that the songs by Ms. Page and Tamisha are the best on the Riddim. Having said that, I must add that Tamisha's track has the best potential to impact a fete. These songs may get some airplay but Island Pop has ways to go before it gets equal airplay with traditional Soca music.

These songs will get lost and fizzle as the traditional Soca songs begin to rock the fetes. I will give them a pass for now but I am not feeling this "Girl Power Piddim"! Take a listen and give some feed back!

"Turn Ova" | Zoelah & Banco | Vincy Groovy Soca 2012

There was quite some excitement on islandmix when this song was announced earlier in the week with the release of the track expected soon after. Today I got the opportunity to listen to the song for the first time and here is my take on the song but was not captivated by what I heard!
This one was advertised as Vincy Ragga Soca on islandmix.com but if you take a look at the accompanying music photo release it is easy to see that it is being marketed as a Groovy Soca track. This is the confusion that takes place with the labeling of the music. This one looks like it was a real 'Turn Ova' for Zoelah because I really don't feel her vibe in this song. Banco sounds very comfortable on the track but not Zoelah.

I liked the start of the song - nice intro but then the vocals and the music got me a little thrown off base - one was racing the other! Something about the combination of the vocals and music just does not sit right with me. I can't put my finger on it but the vocals and music don't seem like they fit like ring on finger. Zoelah sounds like she is just keeping pace with the music. Banco appears to be comfortable with the pace of the music but Zoelah appears to be at the end of the race with this song. I get the feeling that she was trying to keep pace with the music.  When Banco says, "Gyal" he reminded me of something I heard in one of Shurwayne Winchester's song for Carnival 2012. This song has really Turned me over! As I mentioned before something does not feel right about this one. This is not going to be a hit!

Danso Music Has Arrived! | Welcome To Vincy Danso Music

Lord Shorty, may he rest in peace, has been ridiculed and called a liar on several threads on islandmix.com. Some have claimed that he never created Soca music but simply stole the ideas of others and branded the music in the name of Trinidad and Tobago. Today there is a twist to the story but not from the likes of Tommy Joseph or even Sprangalang ... no this is not a joke fest but it should be! However, no one should stand in the way of progress! I just hope that with this "new music" they leave the name of Lord Shorty alone.

The man who has carried on the crusade to vilify the name of Lord Shorty has embarked on re-branding Vincy music and he is using the music originally created by Lord Shorty to launch his new musical platform. Welcome to the dawn of a new day... Welcome to the world of Vincy Danso Music!

Take a little of this and add a little of that and just maybe you can create something that could appeal to the masses. Well after piggybacking on the efforts of Lord Shorty and continually denying his creative genius we now have Danso music coming out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Please note that this post is not meant to demean the hard working singers and musicians of St. Vincent and the Grenadines... I have all the respect in the world for their talents. However, I can't let this one go by before the originator of the Danso idea force feeds it to the unwary web browsing person who may be googling Soca or Caribbean music in general.

What is Danso... well that is a very fair question and the answer may or may not be surprising to you. Is Danso music new or is it the idea of someone longing to have something attached to his country of origin so that they can lay claim to having created a new genre of music? I guess when you read into the plan you may conclude that this is just another labeling scam intended to camouflage Soca music and rebrand it as a product of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Let's get the definition of Danso from the originator or the idea... The following information was sourced from a thread on islandmix.com.

VINCYPOWA CREATED A GENRE OF MUSIC FOR VINCYLAND AND THE WIDER SOCA INDUSTRY
"Yeah mannn, I have HEARD the INSTRUMENTAL to SEVERAL RIDDIMS out of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and CARRICACOU/GRENADA and I have come up with a TITLE of a NEW GENRE that will be embrace by all, thus becoming an INSTITUTION in the SOCA INDUSTRY for GENERATIONS to come.

This CONCEPT has been with me since the BEGINNING of 21st century when I heard MUSIC produced by Mark Cyrus, Adrian Bailey and Cherry Ince, but since those songs were all under the UMBRELLA of RAGGA SOCA, I put it to REST in my THOUGHTS. But now, the thought has come ALIVE in my MIND and I FEEL that I should SHARE it with VINCYLAND and the REST of the WORLD.

I notice a CRAZE ESTABLISHED IN St. Vincent and the Grenadines is now TAKING SHAPE in other TERRITORIES in the REGION and I FEEL it is TIME that VINCYLAND and by EXTENSION, the SOCA INDUSTRY, ADAPT the TITLE of this NEW GENRE.

The CONCEPT of the NEW COINED GENRE revolves around DANCEABLE MUSIC which has elements of sound from around the globe, be it TECHNO, R&B, POP, HIP HOP, AFRICAN STYLED music, combined with that of which is HOMEGROWN in the CARIBBEAN.

I call this NEW CONCEPT/GENRE "DANSO" music.

My COINED CONCEPT, "DANSO", is not just about the MUSICAL ELEMENTS but also about STYLE of DANCING that can be DERIVED from the MUSIC put out by the ARTISTS"

So when did this new genre emerge? Well to be honest just last week the idea was launched on islandmix.com by the Lone Ranger of everything St. Vincent and the Grenadines is the best... VincyPowa! This is one individual who has waged a campaign to discredit Lord Shorty as the creator of Soca Music... He claimed that Soca was created in the United States by the Hughes Corporation with their song Rock the Boat! This is the man who discredits everything that is Trinidadian and even went as far as to state that the steelpan was originally conceived in St. Vincent and that it started with milk pans. This same VincyPowa is convinced that Kevin Lyttle is God sent King of Mainstream Soca who sings Ragga-Soca music... not!

Now I don't know what you may be thinking after reading this post and I am quite aware that by posting the article I am helping with the spread of the term Danso but take note that this posting should be perceived as a disclaimer and not an endorsement of Vincy Danso music!

Please feel free to leave a comment regarding Danso or my article. I will post every comment and will not refuse to post anything even if you think that I am off base with my comments!

I guess the best way to conclude this article is to post examples of Danso Music; these three songs were posted on islandmix.com as examples of Danso music. Do you think that this is something new or deserving of a new label?

Just Bring That - Fireman Hooper

Ants In Yuh Sugar Pan - Jamsey P

Seduction - Kevin Lyttle

Bunji Garlin's So and So on the 40 Foot Island Pop Riddim!

Hey Mr. DJ let's rewind and come again! Hell yes this song is sweet! This "So and So" is one crazy madderific sensational song... I just decided to re-post this song just for the hell of it. I played it over and over again and really enjoyed listening to Mr. Ian Alvarez masquerading in regal splendor as the iRagga Black Spaniard Bunji Garlin. This Bunji is a musical lyrical wonder from Trinidad - he is a treasure because there is no other like him in the entire World! Yes I said it....

This man is the Ragga Soca King of the World but here he is featured on the 40 Foot Island Pop Riddim that is a creation of MadMen Productions. Bunji is  the  lyrical mega star who is going "So and So" and will carry you to the next Carnival.... This song is just fantastic!  Play it over and over and over and over again and guess what..... it just keeps getting better!

"Trials Of A Pan Woman" PRama 2012 | Alexander D Great

This song is a production out of the UK with the vibes coming from expatriate Trinidadians living in the United Kingdom. Debra "Pan Diva" is of Trinidadian decent who is the musical director of the Cambridge University Steel Orchestra and the All female Ladies orchestra. This song is a collaborative effort  was written by Debra with help from the singer of the song "Alexander D Great". Debra is of Trinidadian decent and plays pan with Phase II Pan Groove when in Trinidad.

The singer is  David Lowenthal aka "Alexander D Great", a born Trinidadian living in London from his childhood days... well one can  say that is is British but the 'Trini Spirit' still burns a fire in his soul. This song was originally composed for the August 2011 UK  Calypso Monarch competition which he won with this song.  Trials of  a Pan Woman deals with the plight of women in a male dominated pan fraternity. This song is a throw back from a 'time gone by' but a song that deserves mention. It was also one of the songs that became part of the Calypso for Pan for Trinidad and Tobago's Carnival 2012 and is featured on Panorama Songs on the When Steel Talks website.

Production Notes:
This song was composed by Debra Romain and "Alexander D Great"; The singer is "Alexander D Great". The song was produced by Martin York.

"Aunty Pat (Panorama 2012)" | 3 Canal

This is classic 3 Canal style! The song was composed by Pelham Goddard and 3 Canal and sung by 3 Canal. The song is a tribute to the late Dr. Pat Bishop who dedicated her life to art and was regarded as a cultural icon who exhibited extended versatility in so many areas. She was especially admired for her ability to arrange music for the steel pan and worked with many steelbands including Fonclaire, Birdsong, Skiffle Bunch, Desperadoes Steel Orchestra and Exodus. Enjoy the music of 3 Canal; music that was produced by the great Pelham Goddard.

The following excerpt was taken from the Bio of Pelham Goddard from the panonthenet.com site:
"For 2012, he has penned a monumental tribute to Exodus Steel Orchestra's beloved matriarch and drill master, the late Dr. Pat Bishop who passd away in 2011. 3 Canal wrote the lyrics and performs the song, Aunty Pat. It is Exodus's Panoram selection for 2012 - arranged, naturally, by Pelham."

"Return of the Marsicans (Panorama) 2012" | Ajala

Listen to the talk: "Trini Carnival come and Trini Carnival gone... whey meh Kaiso gone?" Well the story is the same but, we don't have to take that 'jus' so!
It was a Soca sensational festival for Carnival 2012 with the advent of Island Pop taking its place in the festival. However the classics got swept aside and we lost out on so much sweet music. The classics are the songs that started the festival in the early years... Sweet Calypso!
Can you recall the calypsos for Carnival 2012? I am not talking about the songs that competed for the title of Monarch but the songs created especially for the Panorama festival. Let us celebrate their genius here on Zagada!

This year we had a bumper year for really sweet Pan Calypsos. I want to start something here by featuring the songs that were composed especially for the steel-pan this year. "Back in the day" everyone wanted to know what Lord Kitchener had up his sleeve for the pan fraternity however today the tide has changed and the emphasis is on Soca and people like Machel Montano and the Soca Monarch Competition. Well Calypso deserves better and tonight we start with a song composed by Perry Martin and sung by Ajala.

Tribal Caribbean People’s Champion Winner | KES The Band

Here is an interesting 'poll', if you want to call it that, that should be of interest to those in the business of marketing products. This tool used to select the Caribbean People's Champion was done by the website Tribal Caribbean. Now I first saw the result of the "word cloud around the mentions" on what turned out to be a contentious islandmix.com thread. The insanity of the situation is somewhat sad because one individual cannot accept the fact that Trinidad is blessed with so much talent in so many areas.

Of course the problem turned out to be the lack of support received by one Kevin Lyttle and this caused his number one supporter on Imix to challenge the virtues or validity of the software used to come up with the results. However his ignorance and arrogance is indeed nauseating at time but so badly placed this time. I am sure that you have seen these word cloud mentions on blog pages and websites. This is easily understood and has nothing to do with a poll. It simply means that certain words, in this case KES the band, got more hits than others on the Internet sites. VP just suck it up and shut up and accept the results.

The following are excerpts from the Tribal Caribbean site:
Our commitment to digital marketing means that we celebrate and encourage those who are performing well digitally. Using our proprietary tools and methodologies, Tribal Caribbean is able to listen to the conversations that are taking place in the digital space. We use these insights to promote cultural and social trends which help people make sense of how the web is shaping our society. As a digital agency operating in the Caribbean, we believe in using our skills to bring the people of the Caribbean together in the pursuit of common goals and interests.

Kes The Band has been named the ’2012 Tribal DDB Caribbean People’s Champion’. In a digital listening audit performed between January 1st 2012 and March 5th 2012 mentions were recorded for every artist releasing a song for the 2012 Carnival Season. The top 10 Artistes with the most mentions were:

1. Kes the Band 45,471
2. Machel Montano HD 20,736
3. Iwer George 6,023
4. Pelf 4,195
5. Kevin Lyttle 4,063

Part of the analysis allowed us to create a word cloud around the mentions of the winner, allowing us to see any possible trends. Below are the words which were mentioned the most in conjunction with Kes. The bigger the words, the more they were mentioned.

Social Media Mentions: 41,855
Blog Mentions: 2,004
Traditional Media: 1,612
Total Mentions: 45,471

"Walk With Me" | Destra Garcia

Surprisingly different... a side of the artiste named Destra Garcia that is far reaching and outright superb just after Trinidad and Tobago's carnival celebrations. "Walk with me" is a message and I am sure a surprise release taking into consideration that she could have released a carnival song for the upcoming carnivals in the region. This shows that Destra wants to branch out and is sending the message that 'yes she can'; she is doing it was song she wrote and sung with a very positive message for everyone.

The song is a message of hope and can help someone who is struggling with unknown feeling of despair and emotional stress to find a way out. Rescue me and walk with me are strong words that tells you that there is a way to solve your problems. Don't despair my friends just listen to the lyrics and get absorbed not just in the music but really take in the lyrics and feel the glory and the power! I guess we all take a moment, at some time in our lives, to reflect and check the list of expectations to see where we are at at some stage in our lives. Maybe this is the song that helps you put things in perspective. Maybe this is your time to go through your list and put the check marks in place. What ever you decide just listen to the song and just maybe you can find your path, your path to a better tomorrow... see what Destra has already achieved with me!

"Kayak Vybz Riddim" | Skinny Fabulous, Luta & Mr. Killa

My initial take on this Riddim was lukewarm and as a matter of fact I thought that it sounded repetitive after listening to the 'riddim' without vocals (the 'riddim' was first released as a preview without the vocals).

I was not enamored from what I heard. However, I took some time to really listen to the three songs released on this 'riddim' (with vocals of course) and the feedback is quite positive
In an earlier post on islandmix.com I stated that the 'riddim' was repetitive and got some negative feedback for making that statement. However, I also stated that I would wait for the vocals on the 'riddim' before saying how I feel about it.

Well I have listened to the songs and what a difference the vocals have on the 'riddim'. The music comes alive with the vocals and sounds clean, crisp and really sweet! Of the three songs I think that Luta's song has the best flow but my personal favorite based on the lyrics and overall sound is Angela by Skinny Fabulous.

OK Mr. Xpert the verdict is 'Thumbs Up'!. The music sounds really good and the engineering produced really clean and party jamming tracks. The vocals are clear and easily understood and your music flow is 'just right' for grooving.  Well done... Keep up the good work!

"Jack It Up" | Zoelah (Vincy Carnival 2012)

Trini/Vincentian Zoelah Boyd had this to say about her career: "But because I wanted to establish my self as both a regional and international artiste and not just another soca artiste, I chose groovy soca. So when you think Zoelah, you automatically think groovy soca".

Those were wise words and words that she has lived up to with her music and especially her latest release for Vincy Carnival 2012.

Well the Trinidadian born Vincy nurtured sweetheart of the St. Vincent music industry is back at it again with a very sweet groovy track titled "Jack it Up". This song is the best offering I have heard so far for the upcoming Vincy Carnival. The music has a sweet flow to it and as Zoelah said, "So when you think Zolah, you automatically think groovy soca".  Correct is right Zoelah, this one is indeed a Groovy Soca track that will surely do well in any fete... anywhere!
