"Bonda" | Frenchy

Hell No! I was like... what the hell is that? I really liked the photo that came with the music blast but I cannot credit the vocals for this track. Apart from the effort of the music producers there is nothing to like about this song.

Forgive me the music is sweet but I really cant stretch to give approval of the vocal performance for this track. I listened to it a few times and felt the same but each time I listened I liked the beat a little more.

My friends think that the song has potential... some really liked it - I guess I might be wrong about this one and to be honest, I have been wrong many times before.  So  I guess I have to wish Frenchy good luck and hopefully she will achieve all that she set out to accomplish with this production.

"Dis Road" | Jadee

This song by Jadee is designed to drain the last drop of energy that you have in your body. The pace is fast and went by cruising speed into a frenetic fast paced riddim.

I don't know if this will even gain rotation on the radio stations. I can't get a feel for this one - it does nothing for me... if you are into speed then get on the speed highway with Jadee.

No Pay, No Play! | Drummer disrupts Antillean All Stars Performance

This was not expected and the actions of one person delayed the preliminary round of the Southern Panorama small and medium bands competition. The drummer of the Antillean All Stars took this action to protest his displeasure with the leadership of the steel band. The name of the drummer (as reported by the Trinidad Express newspaper) is Vincent Edwards and he took the action because he was owed money. The band performed without the drummer and his instruments. However, do you think that it was it a rhythm less performance?

Think again... the rhythm was traditional, the little drummer boy walked but the music played on and received a standing ovation from the those who were at Skinner's Park, San Fernando where the competition took place.  I know this action by the drum set rhythm maker cause great despair with people venting their frustration and even anger regarding the actions of the drummer from Antillean All Stars. Do you think that he was really the problem?

OK, what he did was atrocious... he not only let down the band but the entire community because of his selfish action. However, there comes a time when one has to stand up for what one believes in. This action by the drummer will result in positive moves that would only strengthen the pan fraternity... how? Well the great error of Antillean All Stars was not being prepared for a situation like what happened. This guy walked away from his responsibility but what would have happened if he got sick and was unable to play?  I really want to know if there was a reserve drummer and if not, Why?

Why did the drummer take such a drastic and severe action to walk away from his friends and fellow musicians just as they were about to perform on stage (in competition to qualify mind you)? From what I heard it all had to do with money. Money always creates a problem especially within the pan fraternity. For years pan player (including drummers) played because they loved being part of the Carnival excitement and playing on the big stage at the Savannah in Port-of-Spain. Recently the pan players got some money after the Carnival was done. However, some are clamoring for payment in advance. This may be such a situation.

Out of this chaos bands have probably learnt a very valuable lesson... be prepared for the worst! The instruments in the band should belong to the band not any individual player. It has been rumoured that the drummer walked off the stage with instrument (drum pedals etc) that belonged to him. Everything should belong to the steel orchestra. Hence my reasoning that the management of Antillean All Stars are to blame for the position they found themselves in on competition night. I am aware that 99 percent of the people calling in to the radio stations want the player ostracized from the steel pan movement but think of the good that will come out of his actions. All it takes is the action of one to effect change. Love him (his mother does) or hate him (all of Trinidad) his actions will ensure that this never happens again (at least to the Antillean All Stars.

The drummer whose actions made the newspaper and was the talk on a few radio shows has already received much verbal abuse for his brazen actions. This blogger would receive the same consideration  for the thoughts expressed in this posting.

Just keep in mind that out of every adversity there is a light at the end of the rainbow... it all depends on your perspective!

"Roll It" | Revelation with Bunji Garlin

Here is something new from Revelation that features the iSpaniard. I don't know if you will 'feel this one'. Personally this one does not feel like a carnival track even though they are singing about "rolling it and wining on it" but this one has too much of a Dancehall vibe to it. I know that most of the young guns don't really care about this and welcome the vibe they have come to expect from Bunji.

I guess now you can see my problem with this song - not enough Calypso/Soca feel... "it is Carnival son"! The Carnival rhythm and the magic of what Trinidad's music is all about seems to have been lost in the Ragga music that the youth love so much today. Having said that, I guess if you like Ragga Soca then this one was written and created with you in mind. Indeed if that is you thing then this is your Ragga Soca flavor of the day!

Now that I have posted the song it dawned on me that just maybe Bunji released this one with the intention to have it seep into the heads of the youth and the Carnival comes to a close.  Please be advised (Warning) that very soon the radio stations will flip "the Soca switch' ending the Calypso/Soca music reign just the way King  Carnival went back to sleep until next year! What does that mean? Well it means that we will be back to Dancehall music the music of young Trinidadians.

"Against All Odds" | Karene Asche

Everyone one of us at some time in our lives have had our backs against the wall and against all odds we manged to pull through and make it - we are here to talk about it right! Every once in a while we have the opportunity to listen to someone's story about the life they lived, about how difficult it was and we are left wondering how did they do it. Well here is Karene telling her story and she does it with class!
Against All Odds is the name of the song and it is one that will be played for years to come. This is your opportunity  to listen to the track compliments Mr. Kenny Phillips of KMPMUSICLABS... Thank you Kenny this one is a wicked one!

This story in song is the classic tale of a family struggle that could be the story of so many of us but one that molded Karene's character and strengthened her resolve to make it 'Against All Odds'. Some could say that is was a depressing situation but even when 'times were hard like banga' she forged ahead with a positive vibe in her heart and soul to make it in this, a Man's World. All the negative vibes and insults did not deter her from challenging and winning the monarch title and moving on to win the Caribbean Title and crown as champion of Champions for the region. Against all odds this petite lady sings with the power and soul of a nation on her shoulders. She is not flawed but is a precious jewel, a shining star clearing a joyous path to success as the 'Monarch or all Monarchs' in the Calypso World here in Trinidad, the Caribbean region and yes that means she is the champ of the World... What a glorious crowning event.

We have a song that is sung with the feelings of a person who has been there and experienced it all. This song is one that is in the same category of the one done by Tigress (Return to Salem) where the chanteuse digs deep into the pain of the moment and translates it into words that penetrate your soul not just your ears. This is a song to watch and a lady who knows how to execute on stage. She now has the confidence that she can do it all because she already has beaten the best the region has to offer... watch out!

Is this the one? Is this the song that would keep her at the top and crown her champion again? Listen, absorb and put your thoughts in place because this year we have some classic songs to battle for the crown. Don't get too caught up with the new Soca and Island Pop music that are dominating the radio stations... stay focused and listen to the calypso releases because they are excellent this year.

"Leave Joan Alone" | Francis "Tallish" Adams

If you like listening to calypso then we have a good one for you. This song was done at KMPMUSICLAB and is one that definitely would not be a favorite of the ruling party of Trinidad and Tobago. Now it is not all that bad but this is a song where Tallish gives an ex-minister a 'Bligh' (as they say on the street). Some will like it while others may feel offended... that is the job of he Calypsonian and Tallish does it with class.

In this song Calypsonian Tallish is singing in defence of Joan Yuille-Williams, ex-government Minister in the former PNM  administration. He is really singing in defence of the former government and taking the opportunity to pepper the current administration making references to the amount of times the former Minister assisted members of the East Indian community and the many East Indian festivals etc. This calypso shifted from an equal opportunity stance to discussion about the race pie. Don't get upset because you have to be able to call a spade a spade.

Regardless of what you think or feel this calypso is well executed and Francis Adams sounds like a young man singing calypso in his prime. This is the first thing I noted about the song. The music is sweet with a traditional calypso rhythm on the heels of Tallish's stinging lyrics. The vocals are clean and the lyrics are biting with a sweet calypso melody... this is a nice one for 2012 very good work.

Production Notes:
The song was written by Francis Adams aka Tallish; the track was produced by Garvin Marcelle for G-Note Recording Studios. The sweetness with finalized by Mr. Kenny Phillips who Mixed and Mastered and finalized the track at KMPMUSICLAB.

"Pump Yuh Flag" (P.Y.F.) | Love It or Hate It?

Machel Montano is the busy bee for 2012 with numerous offerings for his 30th. year in the business of Calypso and Soca - he is the head honcho in the Soca business and one would expect that there would be interest in any music released by this music icon. However, the song that he has released as his Holy Grail for the road has stirred the pot of mayhem creating great controversy or as we say in the islands bacchanal or major kankalang. P.Y.F. is short for his Road mantra aka "Pump Yuh Flag". This song has a love hate relation across the board. Most of the criticisms that I have seen originated on islandmix.com.

Now that is a site that has a tsunami of Machel haters. However, I have noticed that even the people who support Machel have chimed in with 'that is not a good song' with many saying bluntly that "the song is pure shit"! What? How dare they call the song by such a stinky name? OK, they could have said that they "don't feel it" that they don't consider it a good road march song or Machel could do better that that but to call the song 'shitty' is a bit extreme... don't you think so? Let me say this, initially I did not get this song however, after listening to the song I now realize how crafty and street smart the producers of this track have been... Rama, Precision and HD ... scary, smart people!

The plan for the song is as follows... Part one is the original song that was done by Kernal Roberts with Machel Montano and Kasey Phillips of Precision Productions. This is a track designed to create 'madness' on carnival day. The lyrics and music are designed for the youth and those whom are young at heart and for those with some 'sours' in their blood stream.

Part two is the St. Lucian connection of Studio 758 with Penn and Ace doing the version that will be called the "758 Re-Mix". Any Remix always adds Flavor to the original and will indeed be done to further excite the parlancing masqueraders.

St. Lucian (CTV) Television Coverage

Part three is dubbed "The Road Mix" and will be done by Kasey Phillips of Precision Production. I am sure that Kasey will pull a rabbit from his musical hat and give the people exactly what they want to hear. He is young so expect the energy to flow from this musical genius from Palmiste, Trinidad.

Now to be honest I don't think that this song is one of Machel's best efforts for 2012 but here is the thing... it was not written and sung and music created to be his best vocal or musical effort! This song has its place and it was done to win the road march competition. If you are a reveler and you are on the road masquerading or just playing yourself for Carnival you will be "on the edge" and will want to free up and have fun. What does that mean? It means madness, it means you will want to 'Pump Yuh Flag' and jump, jump, jump around, get on mad and bad and that is the intention of the writers of this song, the musicians in this song and the singer who understands how to woo the audience and win the people's choice. That is the wisdom and power of a Machel Montano!

For those of you who dislike the song, I dare you not to dance and have fun when the song is playing on the road. Soca Mafia? What the hell? When you become a star like Machel just the way Kitch and Sparrow were the people will always gravitate to your work because your craft is art in music and song. If you don't believe the hype just watch what happens on Carnival Monday and Tuesday in sweet Trinidad and Tobago.

"Dutty Me" | Zan

Listen to this wicked track from Zan. All the talk is over and done with because this track should quiet all the naysayers. Zan put down a seriously wicked session with this one titled "Dutty Me". If Zan continues to produce music like this one he does not need the vehicle named HD to forge ahead with his singing career. He is doing just fine and I endorse this track... it is really wicked!
I was listening to music on Imix when I came across this track that was uploaded by Julian to the islandmix audio listing. I simply could not resist this one and had to post it here for your listening pleasure from code provided by Julian on islandmix. The music is infectious and the vocals are  excellent.  I am so impressed with this young man's singing ability - he is dynamic with a sweet singing voice. I don't know what happened that HD had to replace Zan but after listening to this I am sure they are scratching their heads now!

This one is a portrait of events that could take place on any Carnival day in Trinidad. The iron is sweet and the rhythm calls you to Dutty Yourself or 'Dutty Me' in oil and mud and just go crazy with this Dutty swag. This is an excellent song with sweet music that ends too quickly. This is a Jab Jab, Cow horn, whistle and ole pan mas with bottle and spoon chipping down de road - well you have to be playing Ole Mas right! Seriously now... "You cyar play mas and fraid powder". I recommend that you put it on rewind and let it go over and over and over again!

Production Notes:
The singer is Zan and the song is on the Old Iron Riddim. The Riddim was produced for lovers of Jouvert mas (on Carnival Monday morning). The creator of the Riddim is David 'Millbeatz' Millien of Millbeatz Entertainment!

"Pan Kankalang" | Wack & WST bicker over video stream!

Buss Pepper and water will come out of your eyes - this was the case as two giants of the Culture butted heads last night. Both parties took the wrong course of action resulting is a spat that was not needed at this time. Indeed it was a case of Pan Kankalang (comess) as Wack Radio 901fm out of San Fernando and When Steel Talks (WST) bickered in a public forum last night.

When Steel Talks everybody listens and they did last night (en masse) as Wack radio streamed the Southern Panorama preliminaries. Apparently WST advertised the free Panorama feed on their Website. WST has around 10,000 members (including me). The followers came to see the show via the Internet and that created problems for the technicians streaming the show from Skinner's Park in San Fernando. The 'crash' resulted is a tit for tat between both parties that ended up in emails sent and audio clips quoted on the Web.

After the feed was restored, Wack's CEO Mr. Kenny Phillips vented his frustrations on air regarding WST posting the site feed for the broadcast. WST first posted their displeasure in the Wack radio Chat box aka shoutbox then sent out emails regarding the issue of the stream. WST posted for discussion a thread titled "False Accusations from WACK fm's CEO, Kenny Phillips". This thread was posted by "Pan Times".

I don't want to get involved in who is right or wrong because both these entities are unique when it comes to promoting the culture of Trinidad and Tobago. WST is a World Body that showcases the Pan instrument from all over the World for everyone to peruse and learn from.

Wack Radio is the only radio station in the World that plays total local content of all the music genres coming out of Trinidad and Tobago 24/7 including great shows weekly on the national instrument, The Steel Pan!

It is my hope that both parties could get together and work out a plan to feed the culture to the World. Kenny Phillips believes in the culture but is frustrated that no one really cares and he has to financially support his cause on his own. Both WST and Wack radio can do more good together rather than butting heads on the streaming of a show. I get WST point and I really do understand how Mr. Phillips feels. A Truce is needed and just maybe something good will come out of this little misunderstanding.

"Terrible" | Erphaan Alves Feat. Machel Montano

I was intrigued when I saw the production notes for this song. I saw live drums by Alpha Simpson but I noticed that the person playing the guitar on this young at heart composition was an old head in one Kenny Phillips. Indeed the footprints of KMPMUSIC and Precision Production are stamped on this one. The song was written by Erphaan Alves, Machel Montano and Kasey Phillips.
These two production entities have clobbered the competition for the Soca and Calypso compositions this year. It appears that Kenny still has some youth running through his musical veins. This song is for fierce competitors - it won't go down well with the older heads but is just the right groove for the youth. This one will surely contend for the Road March!

Initially the beginning voice reminded me of the "last badjohn in Calypso' but that was the voice of Erphaan Alves who took the lead for this one. Machel seems to be everywhere and has added his sweet Soca characteristics to this one.

The theme is about having fun to be ready again with your hands in the air, rags in the air and just mad carnival dancing. They emphasize that it is that time again to wine again because we are 'Terrible'. Terror and Rebel gives you the title for this track Terrible. So you can say that you came to misbehave and get on bad or as they say in this one just get on "Terrible".

Production Notes:
Produced & Mixed by Precision Productions, Live Drums by Alpha Simpson. Guitars by Kenny Phillips. Background Vocals by Jeanelle Archer. Written by Erphaan Alves, Machel Montano & Kasey Phillips. Mastered by Sterling Sound, New York.

"Hot Spot" | David Rudder

King David Rudder has released a Soca composition for Carnival 2012. Immediately I cranked up the engine and played this track with great anticipation. After listening to this song I get the feeling that we have two pieces of music looking for 'musical separation'. What do I mean by this? Well it sounds like someone took a calypso sung by David Rudder and dropped the lyrics over a Soca Riddim.

I understand that these artistes always want to remain current and offer songs that would be accepted by a wide cross section of the listening public. The lyrics are strong but this song would have greater impact if it was sung using a laid back calypso rhythm.

Here is the YouTube Video of  David in the Studio recording

Do I like the song? Well yes... it is David Rudder and surely he has one of the sweetest singing voices out there. However, this rhythm seems out of place for this song. I think that we have been 'spoilt rotten' by David with all the classic work he has given us in the past. Maybe this one will grow on me and I may have to come back and rework this post - hey you never know!

As a Soca beat I must say it is a really nice one and for those whom are into the music more so than the lyrics then this is a sweet one to break out a sweat. I can't say anything bad about David Rudder, surely that would be sacrilegious indeed, but I still hear this one with a calypso rhythm instead of this Soca beat.

The important thing to note about this song is that the topic that he sings about is current and the 'lock down'of the country sure is in keeping with current affairs of the nation. Once again he has shown that the Chantuelle's job (aka Calypsonian) is the heartbeat of the people. He has reported on a current event and has morphed his musical style to suite the current change of space seen in the music industry. I still admire the talent of this great Trinidadian artiste.

Production Notes:
This one was "Written & Produced By David Rudder For Lyricsman Music. Recorded @ Hatcher House Studios, Toronto, Ontatio. Overdubs & Mix @ Seek Music Studios, Toronto Ontario. Engineered By Diego Las Heras. Drum Programing & All Keyboards By Jeremy Ledbetter".

"Don't Force Meh Hand" | Sugar Aloes

Just under the skin of the Aloe Vera plant the taste is bitter indeed. So when you hear about Sugar Aloes you know that the singer who goes by that sobriquet will deliver some very bitter sweet lyrics. This offering from calypsonian "Sugar Aloes" titled "Don't Force Meh Hand" takes a look at the current political scene as only the calypsonian can. These lyrics will definitely not be palatable for the current administration running Trinidad and Tobago.
The Calypsonian has used a fine teeth comb and was able to stick his finger in the political eyes of the government of the day bringing tears to their eyes. This is one for the people but one that will not be loved by the ruling political brass. If you were waiting for 'licks to start sharing here we go... this one is for you!

This is typical Sugar Aloes... biting lyrics but unlike Cro Cro this man has a voice and style that is as sweet as honey. This is a classic calypso style that only the stalwarts of the art can produce. This is a well executed calypso with excellent vocals and biting lyrics.

This is a wicked one and will become a classic in the political calypso field. Well done Mr.Michael Anthony Osuana aka Sugar Aloes.

"Ian Alleyene" | Allrounder

Kaiso, Kaiso, here comes the one and only Allrounder again right on the heels of his 'Garlic Sauce' hit. It is alleged that he is the people's favorite! However for this posting take note that, "It is alleged, I am coming to get your...doh hurt yuh head".

So don't hurt your head because Allrounder and not Ian Alleyene is coming to get you with some witty lyrics and a wicked Calypso rhythm. This is the real deal nothing is being alleged here just sweet Calypso done just for you by this hard working calypsonian. I was looking around the WWW and saw a short video clip of Allrounder and his daughters performing this song on Ian Alleyene's show aka 'Crime Watch'.  Here is the YouTube link to that very interesting Video Clip: Allrounder and his daughters on Crime Watch.

Does Allrounder know how to hook the 'big fish' I don't know but he does understand what Ian Alleyene is all about. Here is the magic of the Calypsonian who can capture the imagination of the nation. So many facebook postings about the work of Ian Alleyene that have brought so much talk and even laughter have been lyrically posted in the history books of the Calypso nation.

"It Is Alleged" is one that should put a smile on your face for sure. Added to that is the photo that Allrounder sent out with this song. I did not say that it was silly but I am sure it will put a smile on your face.

Sometimes you need to look back in order to move forward. That is exactly what we are doing with this Lil Rick posting today. This one was billed as the new dance craze for last year's Crop Over Festival in Barbados. So why am I posting this one today? Well simply put... because, I can!

Look, I was was checking tracks to post and just by chance I came across this one from the Charlie Sheen Riddim and everyone knows that that Riddim 'mash up the place'. So Why not wheel the riddim and come back again?  Look if something is good it is damn well worth doing again! So let's just Jones and Wukup...

Just in case you did not know or haven't heard this track before... be prepared to 'Wuk UP" it is a very infectious and very "Dwaingerous" and infectious Rhythm.

"Free Up" | Sean Caruth

Whoa... it's Carnival! This one was written for the young at heart and especially those with a young heart. This is a real bacchanal song that is just right to create madness on the road. Sean Caruth has put the pedal to the metal on this big truck and you better be ready to move!
Yes this is a dangerous track for the road. It has the crazy riddims to unseat any contender for the peoples choice to mash up the road on Carnival day. The riddim section for this one will entice you to 'free up yuh self and jump' because you look so good in that costume as you jump and free up with your hands and flags in the air. This is a seriously crazy track that should have the big guns worried about what is the song for the road. This is the kind of song to play as the band goes across the big stage - it is full of energy and will make a dismal looking band rock any stage.

Do I like this song... what do you think? Yes, yes and yes again ... this one is wicked and will help everyone in the band to release all their tensions... wicked!

"Mash Up Everything" | Trevlyn Feat. Shurwayne Winchester

Trevlyn and Shurwayne are about to "Mash Up Everything" so watch out for the Big Truck with rags and flags waving it is a tsunami of music mayhem all the way from St. Lucia to the shores of Trinidad and Tobago for Carnival 2012.

This song carries a medium pace and is not one of those high energy fast paced Power Soca tracks. The speed is just right and the vocal of both singers carry the riddim to a level of expectation that only Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago can bring. This is one to watch on the road as Trinidad launches Carnival 2012.

I like the song, the singers did a good job and the production team executed the riddim to entice you to move and groove without the need for several energy drinks. This song is a winner.

The following is from the SOUNDCLOUD download link:
"This exciting riddim features various artiste, and was launched in Trinidad for Carnival 2012, opening with the talents of Trevlyn & Shurwayne Winchester collaborating to create the monster track 'MASH UP EVERYTHING'. The tracked is produced by Slaughter Arts Media : Patrice Regis & Nigel Nicholas.
"it's great to have another single from Shurwayne on our riddims again, we were the first on the island of St Lucia to work with him - about 6yrs ago on the Soca BlueTooth riddim with the track 'Hard Worker' with Mr. Slaughter, and a blessing to work with Trevlyn, whom we met through Pun" said Co-Producer Nigel Nicholas.
"I love the flavor they brought to the riddim, and really looking forward to work with them again, shout outs to Mr Vybz" said Producer Patrice Reggis.

"Carnival Children" | Destra Garcia

Big Chune! I love this song from Destra... What a wonderful song with enticing rhythms! I have listened to many songs that I praised to date but this one is my favorite - this is real sweet Trininidad music!
Do you want to have fun for this Carnival? Well find yourself in a band and demand that they play the latest release from Miss Destra Garcia titled "Carnival Children".
This song was just released for Carnival 2012 and when I heard it I immediately fell in love with the melody. There is everything to like about this song and nothing to dislike. The vocals are sweet and the background vocals remind me of my childhood. If you ever attended a birthday party with kids back then the backup singers remind me of that time (flash back to singing outside in the yard).

The music is joyous and playful and the lyrics are clean and full of Carnival rhythms. So play ah mas for carnival and let them call you Bacchanal children. This song is pure fun and the use of the brass in the music really pulled me in to this sweet jam session. I really felt the vibes for this one... a Winner all the way!

Production Notes:
The track was written by Destra Garcia and Junior ‘Ibo’ Joseph. It was Produced by Junior ‘Ibo’ Joseph and was Mastered by Martin ‘Mice’ Raymond for Champion Sound.

"On Reaching Fifty" | Singing Sandra

Long live the Queen! This year is the 50Th. anniversary of the twin island republic independence but it appears that our navel string is still buried in the United Kingdom. The reference to 'mamapoul man' is a reference to our indulgence for things foreign. The bottom line is that she is spanking the government, the business section and the country as a whole for living in a fools paradise.

We boldly tell people we are an independent nation, a republic yet still we depend on the colonial master for so much. In some cases we have given up our rights and freedoms for simplistic indulgences. Praise the calysonian for recognizing and speaking up for those who don't have the forum to do the same.

Singing Sandra is a powerful singer and can be regarded as the premiere lady chanteuse of the twin island republic. When she sings she commands the audience to pay attention to her lyrics. Even when she pointedly talks about 'manicou man' no one will take offence and would in return say Kaiso, Kaiso, Kaiso commanding the chanteuse to do it again...

The following information came with the Music Blast from KMPMUSICSTUDIO, Palmiste, Trinidad:
This is the brand new release from Singing Sandra called "ON REACHING FIFTY". The Chanteuse is staring us in our eyes and asking some serious questions regarding "our true sense of INDEPENDENCE". This has to be one of the stronger contenders for 2012. Take note that this is the Republic's 50Th. year anniversary (golden anniversary no less) of our Independence!
"ON REACHING FIFTY" - She is asking us this question, 'are we truly independent or do our colonial masters still run de show..."

"Nice & Slow" | Ashley 'Ms Paige' Johnson

Nice & Slow  was featured on this blog on December 30, 2011 as part of the Aye Anthem Riddim. At the time of that posting I featured a picture of the beautiful singer for the post that included five songs.
Today she stands alone with her music as it has been released to celebrate her birthday. I have to be honest, I did not like the video that was produced for this song - it does not look or feel right.
See video here: Nice & Slow YouTube Video.

Here is the Press Release that accompanied the music blast from Julian Promos:
"December 1, 2011. (Toronto, On.) - This year Ms Paige sets the pace for the season with another steamy single entitled Nice & Slow. Following the international success of her power release, Outta Order (Bornbad Riddim, Kubiyashi), for St. Vincent Carnival 2011, Ms Paige comes again with the heat to warm up any fete in the sultry style that only she can deliver. This single rides on a playful groovy tempo with a flirty hook that
will draw lovers in close for another sweet, slow wine.
Nice & Slow is featured on the Aye Anthem, produced by Slaughter Arts Media and mixed and mastered by Nikholai Greene of Precision Productions. Aye Anthem also hosts releases by Jalena ("In Meh System"), Fya Empress ft. Mr. Fusion ("Go DJ"), and Sherwin Gardiner ("No War"). Slaughter Arts Media is also popular for the Ice Age Riddim, Campari Riddim, and Soca Bluetooth Riddim. Fans can expect nothing less than fiyah from this track; an infectious vibe sure to move the crowd in typical Ms Paige fashion: with love, peace and, of course, sooooca."

"We Gettin' On" | Karella

Who is Karella? I never heard of Karella before the music blast arrived from Julian Promos. I had to do some searching to find out about this singer. I did not have to do much search because facebook had the information I needed.
The artiste Karella is Karella D. Cummings. She loves to sing R&B/Soul/Soca and Reggae or just about any music that she likes - just about everything. I am certain that this song will take you by surprise. When you listen you will realize that you are getting a taste of several music styles in this one.

The following information in quotes was taken from her Facebook page:
"Karella D. Cummings is a singer/musician/producer/DJ whose music spans many genres. You may see her belting out a song one day, dancing to Michael Jackson the next, or groovng to a calypso song."

Now what about the song? Well it is a production of MadMen so you get the idea that this one is an Island Pop creation. If you prefer to say a Techno version of Soca well that will work. You have a strong club techno vibe with an Island vibe coming from the vocals. This new music is very interesting in that you get the European vibe with the saucy Caribbean tease. In this case it is the beat of Soca from sweet TnT.

The name of the song is "We Gettin' On" well more like "We gettin' on (bad). Yes there is also the jump and wave scenario that was built into the song to give you the vibe and feel of Carnival. If you happen to be feting or liming in a club and this track should play then thank MadMen for the creation of this music genre (not getting involved with the Imix Vincy did it first conversation). I like this track but it will take some time before music of this genre becomes the music of Carnival in the Caribbean. However, take note that it will happen faster than the Soca invasion of seventies that evenutally usurped Calypso as the music of Carnival. Thumbs up to Karella for her lyrics and vocals and kudos to MadMen...this is music for having fun!

"Bottle of Rum" | Machel Montano

Can Machel Montano sing? Hell yes, he is the stud in this business called Soca. The king of mainstream and underground Soca in Trinidad, the Caribbean, North America and Europe but hell no to these lyrics. If these lyrics were part of a chutney music competition you would hear people voicing their opinions (choops, steups) with the usual chutney rum slogan complaints. I don't approve of these lyrics (no one really cares). Machel is too talented to be singing a love song about rum!
As I mentioned in my Benjai post the music is really good. Now if you don't listen to the lyrics but just the melody you will fall for this song... no doubt. He is a brilliant singer! The music is a case of back to the future because of the live instruments.

We have come full circle from the fusion music of Soca and techno where computers generate riddims for adept production crews right back to traditional instruments and it sounds so sweet!

What you find so fascinating is the fact that you are listening to traditional instruments accompaning Machel on this track. You are not listening to computer generated music... this is the real deal. The music is sweet and Machel was in control for this one. As a matter of fact this is one of his best renditions for this Carnival. However, I really don't like the theme of the song.

Production Notes:
The song was Produced and Mixed by Precision Productions; it was written by Full Blown Entertainment, Machel Montano and Kasey Phillips. The heart and soul of the music are the live music instrumentation and here are the participants: Bass - Billy Joe Saunders. Drums - Alpha Simpson. Guitars - Jeremy Mc Intosh. Keys & Additional Production - Reuel Lynch. The background vocals were done by Tricia Hamilton. The track was Mastered by Sterling Sound in New York.

"The People's Champion" | Benjai

The People's Champion is the name of the offering that we take a listen to and 'look at today'. The song was released today via Julian Promos on Islandmix and immediately the threads lit up. Obviously there was a lot of hype and behind the scenes talk about this song that resulted in the anticipation of the release. Well it is here and you have to be the judge... I have my opinion and will express it here.
People are praising the production as if it was manna sent from heaven but in reality the reason is very simple - it is the live instruments that has given the music 'its distinctive sound'. Of course the production team had to be creative enough to put the riddim together - kudos to them.

I am not very surprised at the reaction because I  understand what is going on. People have been deprived of live instrumentation in today's music production to the extent that when someone releases music with live instruments (not a computer generated sound) they get tizzy. "Oh my goodness this track real wicked!"

All of a sudden they chime in with 'this song real nice... it is sweet etc etc. Here is another wake up call for those of you reading this post... the song is nice, the music is really good but does not make me want to pick up my phone and call a friend and tell them... "man you have to hear Benjai's new song"! Did you get that?

OK, let me try again. Sometimes you hear a song and conclude that it is a game changer, I can't say the same for this song. I love to hear Benjai sing but this song does not change anything and they still need to come better to unseat Cosmic Shift by Ian "Bunji" Alvarez.

Hold on now, before you call me all kinds of name (nothing new here) do you remember the rhythm captioned "Antilles Riddim"? It was supposed to be the game changer... remember? Where is it today? I rest my case!

"WACKY" | Pupa Leendi

I dedicate this song to the jocks at Wack Radio 901 FM. I don't think anyone has played this track on that station but then again I guess they can't play every song released (just the Trini ones they consider worthy). I was on imix and saw the posting by Julian and thought it appropiated to feature the track here today.

Now Pupa will have to forgive me for using his music in this regard but if yuh Wacky then you will love this one. The music is different from the offerings coming out of Trinidad. Someone remarked that it "has a real nice Zouk Creole Flavor". I like the music very much.

Now regarding my dedication to the jocks at WACK radio... I want everyone who is upset with me to take note that when I write what is considered negative about your beloved Wacky radio station please remove your WACK bias and read the message before slaughtering the messenger. One thing you will never see me do is go on facebook or any other forum and remark that someone is a jackass etc. I am publishing every comment made for the post without editing a word. However, I will not publish any vile language remarks. The "mature" DJ who called me an ass or lacking sex & not professional for pointing out the obvious... how professional was that? As I said before and will say here again... focus on the message not the messenger. I read a posting by Triniricky on facebook and have this to say... Slick you are one smart individual!

"Show Wine" | Ark Angel

Show Wine is another one in the wining themes songs coming out of Trinidad and Tobago but you will be surprised after listening to this one. What caught me is the singers voice. In this case his voice stood out from the music that accompanied the vocals. Most of the time you remember the riddim the song is based on but for this one the singer's voice and style caught my interest.  Did you notice that  I have not mentioned the lyrical content of the song? Well, that is because I wanted to make sure when you listen to the song that you pay attention to the voice more so than the lyrics.

This young man is the brother of deceased Blazer Dan who, from all reports, had the potential to do great things in music but was gunned down when liming with friends. His brother has a similar sounding voice and it is a voice that should serve him well in this industry. His voice is 'rough on the edges' but that is what makes this track work. His voice is different and his style should impact the youth. The lyrics  ride a Trinidad theme that made me smile. These are lyrics that every Trinidadian can relate too.

I give this song the thumbs up and look forward to hearing more music from this talented young man. Most of the postings on the WEB state that Blazer Dan lives on with the entrance on his brother for Carnival 2012. This may be so but this singer will be able to walk on his own without the name of his brother behind him (it doesn't hurt though). Welcome Ark Angel. This is one of those songs that will not get much airplay because we have a short carnival season and the big guns in the industry will have the DJ's pushing their music. However, rest assured Ark Angel will make a lot of noise in this emerging fusion music market.

"Crash" | Tian Winter

Tian Winter is the Antiguan Superstar whose voice reminds me of Umi Marcano. As a matter of fact I had to do a double take the first time I heard him on Wack Radio. The song Crash that is featured on this post was part of the Antiguan 'Lime Party Monarch for the Antigua Carnival of 2011 (August).

I have decided to feature two versions of the song here today because it came in the music blast fro Julian and evidently they are pushing the track for Trinidad Carnival 2012. I believe that we should support our Caribbean artistes and there is no doubt that this young man can sing - he is an excellent singer and can really get the crowd going. I have also decided to feature his performance for the Antigua Carnival Competition with this post. Following that video is the new video release for the song for Carnival 2012.

There is nothing to dislike about this song and the production. It is an excellent song that was beautifully sung by this really talented young man. Tian can and should do other music. He has a voice that should do well in the R&B market. This is a song to have on rewind - Tian's voice and vocal performance deserves serious airplay on radio.

"Head Bad" | Michelle X & Kes

This song was released earlier this month but I sat on it because I was not sure how I felt about it... still conflicted. I liked the way it started with both singers announcing that "Meh head bad, on the road" but then Michelle X took the lead vocal and both the vocals and the music fell out of favor with me. There are up and down moments in the song but I can't say that this one will be a strong contender for anything.
The theme of the song is excellent... 'head bad' and 'on the road' are Carnival themes that drive the festival but this is one MadMen production that did not really capture me from beginning to end. It does have a feel good groove to it but something is missing from this track.

Madmen continue to break barriers with their fusion of Soca and Techno music better know as Island Pop but no one really expects everything to come out golden and end up at the top of the charts. This song may do well in some fetes and on the road but many of the radio stations will not play this one. I can't recall hearing it on the Culture Krazy station yet.

The following information in quotation is part of the article that accompanied the song on the YouTube posting:
"A true masquerader song, it immediately transcends your soul to the moment on Carnival Tuesday while crossing the biggest stage on earth that you feel yourself soaring in pure pleasure towards the heavens, as the music fuels every particle of your being.
MadMen Producers continue to push the boundaries of what was to give world listeners a new sound that forever will be imprinted in their musical minds as of and from sweet TnT. ©Mystie Thongs."

"Surrender" (Official Remix) - Farmer Nappy Feat. Lady G.

Farmer Nappy really brings some sweet tracks for our listening pleasure. This remix of Surrender with featured singer Lady G. has brought new life to this sweet song. The music is full of content and the vocals are very good.

I have noticed that Farmer is now releasing videos for his songs that were released  in the last quarter of 2011. I don't mind , and it should be noted/stated that it is an extremely good business move on his part to remind the consumer of these sweet tracks. If you love the music show your support and pump up the volume!

There have been many surprises this year and especially with Machel Montano releasing so much music including being featured on other singers tracks; I do hope that we get something new from this versatile artiste known as "Farmer Nappy". There isn't much to say about this one other than pump up the volume and enjoy it!
