A touch of Carnival at Point Borough Day launch | The Trinidad Guardian
The article states "A touch of Carnival at Point Borough Day launch" but everyone knows that come this Saturday that it is real mas in Point. This is not a touch of Carnival but bacchanal at its best and simply a continuation of the just concluded Carnival celebration that gripped the nation.
Indeed this is a time to fete and rollick on the streets just like people did during the national festival that brought King Carnival to an end recently. It is the rebirth and you will be fascinated (if you participate) that you can't tell the difference between the real thing and this Borough Day celebration. The following is the article that appeared in the Trinidad Guardian newspaper:
"It was a kaleidoscope of colour and activity in the borough of Point Fortin on Friday evening. Traditional and modern Carnival-esque characters and members of the borough merged at the Victor Chin Kit Park to be part of the official launch of the Point Fortin Borough Day Celebrations 2010. This year marks the 30th anniversary as Point Fortin mayor Victor Mitchell declared the celebrations open with a symbolic ribbon-cutting.
Mitchell expressed his desire to see an arts centre in the borough, so the wealth of talent could be showcased to the world. He said this year’s theme—perspective, potential and prosperity—was dedicated to the people of Point Fortin, “…in which love, togetherness and beauty abound. We are still the cleanest and safest borough in the country,” Mitchell said. Also attending the launch were Foreign Affairs Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon, the Point Fortin 2010 delegates for the upcoming Miss Point Fortin Queens and delegates from the men’s pageant On Point and the Miss Siparia Fete.
The band Royalty put their J’ouvert costumes on display, Temaka Darius sang the Borough Song with pride and the band Hypnotic provided entertainment. Some of the events over the three weeks are the Mayor’s charity Culinary Fiesta, the Military Parade, the Mayor’s Charity Ball, J’ouvert celebrations and the Rumshop Lime."

Wallerfield, Trinidad
eTeck presents a documentary that showcases Trinidad & Tobago's significant role in World War II
Video from: http://www.viddler.com/
"The American rights to the airfield were obtained via the Destroyers for Bases Agreement in September 1940 when the United States transferred fifty destroyers to Great Britain in exchange for Army and Navy base rights on British possessions in the Americas.
In 1941, Trinidad was alarmed by a large number of Nazi U-Boats prowling of its coastline, intent on disrupting British shipping in the Caribbean Sea, and using the Vichy French controlled island of Martinique as a possible supply facility. Although the first United States Army personnel arrived on Trinidad on 24 April 1941, it was only with the United States' entry into the war in early 1942 that Allied planners decided to counter the Nazi threat by establishing major air and naval facilities on Trinidad.
Waller Army Airfield was activated on 1 September 1941 with the assignment of the 92d Service Group. The unit's mission was to establish a flying facility within the United States Army Fort Read post. The unit consisted of the group's Headquarters, and the 92d Air Base and 309th Material Squadrons. The group was assigned to the Caribbean Air Force.
Waller Field was named after United States Army Air Force Major Alfred J. Waller. Major Waller was a distinguished World War I combat pilot and was killed in an air crash on 11 December 1937 at Langley Field, Virginia. The airfield was intended to have four runways, but the two southern ones were canceled due to the nature of the ground.
Waller was built to be the premier US combat airbase in Trinidad, but events overtook the plan. The South Atlantic Air Route to Europe quickly developed and became the most often used method of getting aircraft to the African and European theaters of war. Air Transport Command flew aircraft to Waller from South Florida airfields, then from Waller, aircraft were flown to Belem Airfield, Brazil, then across the South Atlantic Ocean to Freetown Airport, Sierra Leone and then to North Africa or England. Airfield congestion at Waller became so acute that the combat aircraft, the bombers actually confronting the U-Boats had to be moved out to Edinburgh (Carlsen) Airfield when it was completed.
With the establishment of United States bases on Trinidad and other Caribbean islands, the Nazi menace was eliminated by the action of numerous air and naval patrols. In 1943, President Franklin Roosevelt visited Waller Field on his way to the Casablanca Conference in North Africa."

Stand For Something - Elspeth Duncan
Some time ago I featured this video in one of my blogs (parked blog). Now that our beloved Trinidad and Tobago is gearing up for general elections we all need to forget about party politics and "Stand for Something" more than our tribal tendencies that grips our being during these maddening times.
Think about the issues and vote with a clear conscience. Take a look at the video and think about what you want for your country... then vote for the change that you want! I will post part of the information that accompanies this video but I will also place the YouTube link so that you can read the entire listing. See ReverbNation.

Now is Wow: There comes a time when we must each stand for something. This video was created from footage I shot of various protests taking place in Trinidad between late 2005 and early 2006. It represents the collective voice of the people at a time when the republic of Trinidad & Tobago is going through crisis and experiencing transformation on many levels. The statements (written in bold) below are from placards held and t-shirts worn within the video. The first few opening bars of music in the video are the first few bars of the national anthem of Trinidad & Tobago, for which it is always requested of us: "Ladies and gentlemen, please stand." The video takes this request a step further and calls for each of us, once and for all, to stand for something.(Rest of music - Elspeth Duncan, from the CD Manzanilla)
Gun = Death, not life
Stop the Violence
No to smelta plants
Enough is enough
Once Race ... Human Race
We want back our unity

Winston Dookeran the Patriot
Winston Dookeran is a patriot or he may not have had a choice given the current popularity of Kamla Persad Bissessar. Then again it could have been because he lost membership to the UNC when Mrs. Bissessar ascended to the power in the UNC. What about Finance? The UNC has Jack Warner and it seems like some of the big financiers behind the COP have shifted to the UNC. Winston Dookeran leader of the COP - a patriot or was he forced to accede to the might of the UNC?
Mr. Dookeran is no fool and as a matter of fact is one of the smarter persons in politics today - an intelligent economist who once controlled the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago. Indeed the COP may not have the resources of the UNC and it is a fact that in order to make this Alliance work he may have had to make decisions that make him look weak; but then again politics is all about positioning and making the right moves to achieve the goal of governance.
It appears that Mr. Dookeran has made sacrifices and it has been reported in the Trinidad Guardian newspaper that he was instrumental in securing "crucial roles for Makandal Daaga, Ashworth Jack and Errol McLeod during bargaining late last week". We now have a very interesting slate of candidates lining up to fight the political might of the PNM and the architect may just be Mr. Winston Dookeran. No political entity every has the perfect slate of representatives but it is possible that with this group of candidates in place victory could finally be achieved - anything is possible. If this should happen just remember that it was the wisdom of one Winston Dookeran who ensured that someone had the vision to rise above petty politics and act like a true patriot, sacrificing much, to achieve the greater good.

Raindrops on Skin - Elspeth Duncan
Who is Elspeth Duncan? This lady is very unique and her music is captivating and enjoyable. I spent some time browsing her webpage and listening to the music and to tell you the truth my attention span is very limited - I stayed listening for a while and that says a lot.
Here is a short bio from her page with the corresponding link to go and immerse yourself in her World:

Legionairenow - "Move On"
Trinidad and Tobago is known as the land of Steelband and Calypso, Soca, Chutney-Soca, Rapso and other music genres. However, what about "a tropical blend of pop, rock and electronica"? Am I confusing you? Now to be honest I have listened to this music and can't place it in my world of 'Trini Music'.
I guess one has to be open to anything and with clear thoughts take a deep breath, close your eyes and feel the music. I still can't feel the 'Trini' in this music but you tell me... I am curious because my daughter said that it sounds like a modern version of Enigma... what are your thoughts?
Legionaire: Legionaire are Jason Bodden and Sarina. Hailing from the Caribbean isle of Trinidad our sound is a uniquely tropical blend of pop, rock and electronica.

At its heart, Move On is a song about being stuck in an unloving relationship, one that has already died but the narrator (myself) is unwilling to move on. As a result I thought that a cemetery would be more than fitting. Even better one with an abandoned and ruined church. The setting of course that I was drawn to the beautiful St. Chad ruins at Macqueripe. It’s a shame that this site, although it has been deemed a historical heritage one, is nevertheless slowly falling in onto itself. I really believe that it is only a matter of time before the only way we will be able to appreciate it and the beauty of its setting is through photos and videos such as “Move On”

Daaga, Abdulah & McLeod to face Polls
This general elections in Trinidad and Tobago is going to be an exceptional one indeed. The united opposition is coming out with candidates that one never thought would ever be seen on the same platform. I shudder to think about the person who has to face former trade unionist Errol Mcleod. This man is very articulate and fiery at the same time. The people of Laventille will have a grand choice to make when one of their sons is placed before the electorate - one of their very own to choose or reject. Another trade unionist David Abdulah is also very fiery and would present himself as a formidable opponent to whomever the PNM challenger will be - we are heading for a might showdown my friends.
The Trinidad Guardian newspaper reports:
"Trade unionists Errol McLeod and David Abdulah are likely to contest the May 24 general election on joint opposition “unity” tickets. And veteran political and social activist Makandal Daaga is expected to line up in one of the Laventille constituencies. In addition, United National Congress (UNC) is now slated to contest 24 seats, more than earlier designated. Further, discussions were ongoing on whether there would be a single ballot box symbol. These are the major developments arising from a late night meeting Saturday among the major opposition political players. Informed sources said McLeod and Abdulah were likely to be candidates of Movement for Social Justice (MSJ), one of the organisations in the unity pact.

Bucco Goat Race Facility
On Wednesday April 14, 2010 I posted and article on the Tobago Goat Race Festival. I was concerned about the cost of the facility (over $100 Million dollars) and the benefits for this expenditure. Well today I am happy to post an article that appeared in the Tobago News regarding this facility. The 'complex' will serve many purposes - a plus in m;y book and shows that the people in Tobago have their heads in the right place.
The name of the complex is the Bucco Center and it was put in service for the Goat Races but is not a finished facility. Construction work continues with the complex servicing many areas. This means that it will be a multi purpose facility serving the community. The complex will serve the following:
- Goat Race Facility,
- Community Centre,
- Fisheries Facility,
- Tourism Facilities,
- Car Park for 200 vehicles.
"Access to the new facility which hosted the Easter Goat Race Festival will now be restricted in order to allow infrastructural works to be completed. He added that construction works at the centre were due to be reconvened at the site from this week.
Adams said upon completion the centre will comprise the Goat Race Facility, a Community Centre, a Fisheries Facility, Tourism Facilities, and a Car Park for 200 vehicles.
He also commended the contractors for their prompt construction of the centre. Contractors of the Goat Race Facility are MSR Construction Ltd. and Adams Project Management and Construction Company Ltd.; while the contractor for the Tourism Facility is Construction Services Supplies Ltd.
The Secretary also announced that the National Maintenance Training and Security Company Ltd (MTS) was now the Project Manager of the Scarborough Library, replacing the National Insurance Property Development Co Ltd. He added that the MTS will commence the tendering process for a new contractor to complete the library and that a contract was expected to be awarded for the completion of the project by June 2010."

Dookeran to become President | The Trinidad Guardian
Dookeran to become President | The Trinidad Guardian
Soldier of Love
; The Twilight Saga: New Moon (Two-Disc Special Edition)
I do hope that this is pure speculation because Mr. Dookeran as President is a waste of his talent. If this alliance of opposition forces should be so fortunate to win the next general elections then they need every able bodied person in places of importance and Mr. Dookeran's place is in finance. Then again how can a deal be made for the Presidency when it is an elected position? I believe that this is simply mischief created by the press - pure speculation.
“The constitution states clearly how a president is elected. The fact is you need to have a majority in Parliament to elect a president. “If people make an agreement like that, then you will have to draw up something like a contract, and I do not see anybody going to court with such a contract, because it would not look good on both sides.”

Now is the time to tell the people about the plans for the development of the country in terms of hospital services, food security (we must grow more of our food), a better water supply, better traffic regulation with additional transportation infracture, jobs for those in need and the eradication of the crime spree now infecting the country.
I don't want to hear about the Presidency now - this is not the time for this figure head position. Talk about limiting the terms that a Prime Minister can serve and tell me who will be the government ministers so that I can access who I want to govern the country. Let's deal with the issues not how the pie will be shared - remember Mr. Manning is an intelligent politician who understands the psyche of the people of Trinidad and Tobago - watch out!

Potpourri of culture, adventure and history
Trinidad and Tobago's Newsday : newsday.co.tt :
The event is being advertised as a Potpourri of culture, adventure and history and should it live up to expectations will become a yearly event that should be marked on every calender. The event should be one that will showcase "Best Village" performances, adventure in the hills and kayaking that seems to be a hit with many Trinidadians. History is always important and to think that many Triinidadians are not aware about the "Cedula of Population of 1783 that changed the population of 1000 in 1773 to 18,627 by 1797. This Festival is one to watch and hopefully it will grow and become one of the biggest in the country.
“The Festival will cater for everyone, from children and adults to die-hard explorers,” Mark said, adding that both visitors and locals are in for a visual and auditory treat during the two days of the Festival.
On the opening day, Saturday May 1, the Festival will highlight outdoor activities such as mountain bike racing, kayaking, Dragon Boat racing and nature tours. There will also be a Farmer’s Market where fresh vegetables will be on sale. The day will climax with a concert, “Potpourri Musicale” from 6 pm at Williams Bay, featuring some of the country’s top artistes.
Sunday May 2, will serve to bring together all the facets of the outdoors: history, culture and food, at the “Festival Village” located at Williams Bay, next to the Kayak Center. Here, visitors will be treated to a family-oriented atmosphere, friendly sea-based competitions, great music and entertainment, theatre, activities for the kids and an array of mouth-watering fish dishes in the ‘Fish Fuh So” booths.
During the week leading up to the festival there will be tours to various sites in Chaguaramas and the offshore islands. Persons are encouraged to pre-book nature and historical tours by calling 634-4227 ext 137.

May 24 is Election Day in Trinidad and Tobago

The breaking news headlines that you see above appeared today on the Trinidad and Tobago News webpage. The anxiety is over and the battle begins in earnest to win the hearts and minds of the citizens of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago for control of the government. People are torn because of loyalty to the ruling PNM and the fact that so much turmoil has gripped the current administration and the specter of a combined opposition that could be rife with infighting and jockeying for positions of power in that body. The cry of the people who believe in the PNM is "we know what we have but we don't know what we will get". On the other hand the UNC/Alliance wants people to remember that they ruled the country when oil was $9.00 a a barrel and they left the treasury with a surplus. The election date is set and the race begins in earnest.
The Trinidad and Tobago New website published the following today:
"At 1.05 PM today, a release from the Office of Prime Minister Patrick Manning advised President George Maxwell Richards to issue a writ of election appointing Monday, May 24, 2010, as the date of the General Election."trinidadandtobagonews.com/blog.

Trinidad Memories: Remember When 1 "Shiny Coins"
Do you recall as a child finding money that looked dull and dingy? I am talking about the days when the coins in Trinidad were the large penny and cent with images of the King and Queen of England. Those coins were times bigger and heavier that the coins that circulate today. I remember when fire would burn the area of the rail tracks and the surrounding areas the children would walk through the area looking for things to collect. More time that ever we would find marbles and coins - money.
So what did we do with these coins? Ah ha this is where the fun started. We would find a spot in the yard that was a little damp and place a coin on the earth. The next step was really interesting with our bare feet (heel) we would twist and turn causing the earth to grind over the coin. Interestingly the coin would become shiny clean. Why did we do this? I don't have a clue (maybe we liked looking at 'new shiny coins') but looking back I can recall that it was an activity that was fun. Why else would we have done it?

Today people walk past coins in the street and steups. The value of money and even people's values have changed. I know back then one cent (called a penny today) got me six paradise plums. That 'sweetie' was red and orange in color and was covered in sugar. In those days the big Penny was worth two cents(we are talking about twelve paradise plums). Indeed times have changed but this does not mean that we cannot look back and recall those sweet days growing up in a period when life in Trinidad was considered 'ketch arse'but everone shared the little they had - the good ole days!

Watchekongs!
This post came about at yesterday's lunch break while chatting in the Wack Shoutbox; it was edited for content by Annie Romany aka Gail. I hope it puts a smile on your face but most of all bring back some childhood memories.
Watchekongs (Watchicongs) for those who don't know came before bata bullets so don't confuse the name with the infamous bata line of sneakers. If the name is unfamiliar to you ask your mother or father who grew up in the early years about watchekongs and crepsoles. In other words you could easily think of them as 'old fashioned canvas sneakers'.
Today sneakers cost hundreds of dollars but there was a time in Trinidad and Tobago when sneakers were known as watchekongs and people wore sappats and alphagats at home before rubber slippers came on the scene. This all seems like it was so long ago now look at where we are with computers and hi-tech sneakers with shock absorbers in the heels. If your memory is really good then you would also recall the indestructible 'dragon watchekong'. That shoe was white and worn by males only and to tell you the truth the heel would wear out and leave the top intact. See if that is the case with the sneakers that sell for hundreds of dollars today.
Watchekongs were the pride of every child because we had one pair to last for the school term and longer if necessary. It was easy to know those who did not wash their watchekongs every weekend because they stunk. A stinky watchekong was very obnoxious and a joke indeed for the kids on the block. This was usually the case when they were worn with socks. This was a case of severe toe-jam that reeked. I remember the guys breaking up a lime (Trinidadians hanging out) by tossing a stinky sneakers in the midst of the gathering. In this case people would remark: "Oh gosh that worse than the Mang". For those who don't know the 'Mang' is a reference to the mangrove swamp in the vicinity of the LaBasse that stunk up the entry to Port-of-Spain 'back in the day'.
Those of us who took time out to wash their watchekong with blue soap and a scrubbing brush would take out the insole and wash it separately. It was important that the insole was dried properly because if it was just a little dame it would stink by the end of the day if worn with a wet insole. It was typical to see watchekongs on bleaches (a stand made with chicken wire where clothing was spread out to dry in the sunlight). Sneakers were hung by the 'tong' on the lines and left to dry in the breeze and sunlight. The girls with their white watchekongs would use whitening to bring out the best in the sneakers. However, if rain should fall and they had to walk through the showers the whitening would run off the sneakers - not the best situation.
I must mention some of the tricks of the trade that manifested because of 'hard times'. Some people used the 'string' from the fig tree as laces (times were really bad in the country districts) but "marling" (very strong twine) was used in the towns where might bull kites were popular.

Indeed the good old days gave us the watchekong and even though by today's standards they can be considered inferior products they have left us with superior memories that we cherish to this day. Let's see if today's generations will think about sneakers the way we reminisce about "watchekongs".

Tobago Goat Races 2010
In 1925 a very unique sporting event started in Tobago. Today in the village of Bucco the best Goat races can be seen and enjoyed during Easter. This year they celebrated the 85th. anniversary of this special event in a new $100 Million facility. The facility provides excellent accommodations for visitors and the participants. It should also be noted that the facility now boasts "veterinary and training facilities among other highlights." Now I don't know about you but I am wondering if the facility is used for any other events and how often do they race the goats - after all it is a $100 Million investment!

Vincy Mass - Calender of Events 2010
Carnival has come and gone for most of the regions of the World. Trinidad and Brazil and most of the nations that have their carnival celebration fixed to the Catholic calender have already experienced the revelry of King Carnival with spectacular costumes and songs to make the nation jump and wave. However, having said that not every country has experienced the joy and jubilation that comes every year to those whom are fortunate to experience this joyous revelry.
Barbados and St. Vincent have removed the religious yoke that ties the Carnival to short and 'long' seasons. However, the dates that these islands have chosen make complete financial sense. The people who make a living from the carnival festivities have adequate time to plan and take advantage of the fixed carnival dates. I have attached the calender of events for the 2010 Carnival celebration that will take place in St. Vincent and an article from socafreak.com about the history of St. Vincent Carnival. I hope you take advantage of the information because we are one caribbean people and must learn to support each other's development.
St Vincent Carnival or Vincy Mas began as far back as the 1890s and was celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. This was a time to throw away inhibitions and "free-up" before the commencement of Lent. The Catholic Lent is a period of fasting in which Catholics refrain from loud behaviour and sinful indulgences.
In 1976 a decision was taken by the CDC (Carnival Development Committee) to change the date for carnival from February/March to June/July starting the following year. To this day Vincy Carnival is held in June/July.
Vincy Mas like other West Indian carnivals is a mixture of African culture, European tradition, and Caribbean and local folk lore. It's a season when the general populace joins in the celebration of Vincentian talent, artistry and craft in a variety of forms. These include steel pan music, soca, calypso, and masquerade.
Vincy carnival is now much more than just a cultural event but a major economic activity. It attracts thousands of tourists to the island, as well as overseas based Vincentians. Vincy Mas has become a major money earner for the country.
Major highlights include The Miss Carival Show which is a leading Caribbean beauty pageant. Then there's the much anticipated Mardi Gras Parade of the Bands where Masquerade Bands compete for Band of the year. The Dimanche Gras Show highlights the finals of the National Calypso Monarch Competition, King and Queen of Carnival and Panorama. The Soca Monarch Competition in Victoria Park is another major attraction. For the children, there's the ever popular Junior Carnival, Junior Calypso, Junior Soca Monarch and Junior Panorama.
If you want to come to Vincy Land at a time when there are shows galore and lots of excitement, trust me, there's no better time than Vincy Mas 2010.

The National Flag of Trinidad and Tobago
From www.gov.tt:
"The national flag was designed by the Independence Committee and selected to be used as the National Flag in 1962. Its colours are Red, White and Black. Red is the colour most expressive of our country, it represents the vitality of the land and its people, it is the warmth and energy of the sun, the courage and friendliness of the people. White is the sea by which these lands are bound; the cradle of our heritage; the purity of our aspirations and the equality of all men under the sun. The Black represents for us the dedication of the people joined together by one strong bond. It is the colour of strength, of unity, of purpose and of the wealth of the land. The colours chosen represent the elements Earth, Water and Fire which encompass all our past, present and future and inspire us as one united, vital, free and dedicated people." Caribbean Soca and Islandmix banter!
I posted the following commentary on "islandmix.com/backchat" in one of the Soca discussions. They continually fight over whose Soca is better and mostly bash anything from Trinidad. So why am I posting a comment from Islandmix here? Well, I want people to be aware of how much we have lapsed into the abyss of inter-island Soca condemnation. It is easy to see that we simply can't appreciate our unique qualities but need to bash each other simply for bragging rights - it is all so silly!
"The comments for this thread clearly shows that the music that is called Soca today is very different throughout the Caribbean. Let me put it this way in Trinidad our national dish is callaloo but one can find foods looking the same and called the same throughout the Caribbean region. However, the taste is different even though it looks the same and goes by the same name.
Soca today (even in Trinidad) is not the same music that can be identified by the beat of some of the original and big name Soca music that started the trend. When Lord Kitchener sang Sugar Bum Bum that beat was unique (listen to the toc, then two quick toc toc that was typical to the Soca sound back then). What is called Soca today is not the music that Shorty named Soca even that was different to Kitchener's Soca and even Maestro's music.
It is useless trying to argue and to prove that Soca from this island is better than Soca from that island etc. I say this here because it is a bone of contention throughout Islandmix Soca discussions.
Let us as a people realize that we are all unique and make music that is loved throughout the World. I live in the United States and I have never heard born American citizens say this Soca is better than that Soca. As a matter of fact they don't even know the word Soca but they understand that West Indian music is about having a good time - why can't we simply accept our differences and move on - love up the music that's all we need to do!"

Good Citizens
Who is a good citizen? Well as far as I am concerned a good citizen is one who is interested in the progress of the nation without fear or favor of any political party. A good citizen respects the law and ensures that the environment is protected. A good citizen ensures that he/she produces worth for the benefits received when pay day rewards their endeavors at their work place.
We can list many ideal that could make a good citizen however now that election fever is in the air can we consider the good citizen one who will put country first and party a distant second? Do you believe that this is possible in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago? We have heard die-hard supports remark, "ah born ah PNM and I will die a PNM". The same can be said for many of the supporters for the opposition UNC in that they can't see themselves ever supporting the ruling PNM or the COP political entity. Can we consider these die-hards good citizens?
In the upcoming general elections each political entity will find ways to motivate their supporters to snub the opposing forces and this can become extremely bitter with no one really dealing with the issues of good governance. What we need to hear from the politicians is how they plan to guide the country towards a stable political and economic situation while ensuring that citizens can walk the streets without the fear of criminals committing acts of violence without penalty.
Reasonable food prices, acceptable transportation and access roads, dependable water supply and reasonably priced electricity. The corrupt practices of many will be revealed and of course many will go to trial but good citizens need to put their petty differences aside and vote for people who will represent them and not simply serve the interests of the party. Sometimes the interests of the party and the people cross paths and that could be ideal but most of the time representation of the needs of the people and community fall on the wayside as the political interests of the party takes precedence.
Good citizens should examine the representative and question his or her motivation to run for political office. Representation of the interests of the community should come first and the ideals of the political party a close second.
Good citizens should vote with their brain and not their Hart. Sorry I meant hearts. Now good citizens have to choose between the PNM and a possible combination of the UNC/COP/TOP/NJAC? Whom do you trust to guide the fortunes of the nation? Then again are you the type of person who knows the devil you have but don't want to find out/care about the devil you might get? You have the power of your vote to keep the same or force change. Are you a good citizen?

"Catch Di Riddim"
I came across this article from the Jamaica Observer while browsing the Caribbean news headlines. The article has many bits of information but two paragraphs were of interest to me and they are presented here. The link above and at the end of this post will take you to the original article.
The first paragraph is about the St. Lucia Jazz Festival but the article had some information about the artist Zoelah that was unknown to me (text highlighted in red):
"St Lucia Jazz Festival is set to take place from May 1-9. Among the confirmed performers are Ne Yo, Corinne Bailey Rae, Shaggy, Steel Pulse, Laura Izibor, Jeffrey Osborne, Freddie Jackson and St Lucia's very own Teddyson John.
St Vincent native and soca artiste Zoelah who was recently in the island for Bacchanal Fridays, says she likes to cook and do cosmetology in her spare time. She added that if music hadn't worked out for her, she would've pursued a career in cosmetology. Zoelah was born in Trinidad, but moved to St .Vincent while still an infant.
Trinidadian soca artiste Oscar B who calls Jamaica his second home, says he is working in the studios on various recording projects. He said an album of new material is expected this summer.
The Second bit of information is about Bill Ocean's song Caribbean Queen:
"Did you know that the song Caribbean Queen recorded by Billy Ocean, was recorded under different titles for release in different parts of the world? There were two other versions of the song, namely African Queen and European Queen.
Caribbean Queen hit the number one spot on the Billboard R&B and Hot 100 singles charts in 1984.
In 2004, the song was re-released as a digital single for its 20th anniversary, shooting up to number 25 on the Billboard digital singles chart and garnering radio play across the US and UK.

PM Manning said that Trinidad and Tobago is difficult to run!
Taking into consideration that Parliament was dissolved at 12:00 midnight and on this day a we enter a new era of politics in Trinidad and Tobago I believe that it is fitting this video is seen again.
- Do you believe that the Prime Minister's decision to call general elections a sound/rational decision?
- What do you believe will be the role of Dr. Keith Rowley?
- What is the next move for Mr. Basdeo Panday... Will he become a spoiler?
- Do you think that this was a strategic move by the PM to prevent an early mobilization of forces by the UNC and COP?
- Do you believe that the opposition forces are ready for this election?
- Who will win the next general elections?

Breaking News "Parliament Dissolved in Trinidad"
3:32 PM BREAKING NEWS!
The Prime Minister of The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago has advised the President to dissolve Parliament thereby leading to General Elections two years before it is constitutionally due. That means an election date will be announced soon.
Even thought there were rumors that this was possible, no one really thought that the PM would have done this so soon after the Uff report. The report that was delivered presented information that points to managerial ineptitude or just plain corruption in the manner in which UDeCoTT disbursed the treasury purse. Some sectors of the population are in shock but already the call-in shows are showing evidence of party fanatics calling in ready to defend the ruling party and enable the PM to get a new mandate from the people. In the last General elections the PNM won with a commanding position but they lost the popular vote. Today there is clear indication that there will be a united opposition to fight the election and this should make for a very interesting outcome now that more people are unhappy with the current administration's performance. Interestingly this means that the no confidence vote on the PM that would have taken place in Parliament tomorrow is now null and void - smart move Mr. Prime Minister. Don't flinch and keep an eye on the news and your ears peeled for the latest information coming from the twin island republic!
A news release from the Office of the prime minister, issued this afternoon, states:
"In accordance with Section 68 of the Constitution of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Honourable Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago today advised His Excellency, President George Maxwell Richards to dissolve the Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago with effect from midnight, Thursday, April 8, 2010.
His Excellency, President George Maxwell Richards TC CMT Phd has issued the relevant Proclamation."

Roucou - A Red Affair
Can you recall using roucou as a child? Well I do and it was my curiosity that led me to this strange looking fruit. The fascination with the fruit came when I squeezed it in my hand and my fingers became red. Ah ha blood I thought and at the time my idea was to use it to make fake blood and use it to scare the hell out of my brother and sisters. However that never happened. You see after picking enough to carry out my cleaver plan I headed home to carry out my plan. Well when my mother saw the roucou she advised me to cut them open and add water to it and squeeze the seeds to get the color out. What was happening here? Hmm did my mother read my mind and was going to be part of my plan? No not at all, my mother wanted the red liquid to put in food - What? Indeed the roucou is used to add color to food my friends and with that my plan came to an end.
The fluid has very good shelf life and is used to add color to pastelles and I have read that it is used to add color to good ole golden ray margarine. The so called red color (to me) when exposed to air really has a slight orange color in the liquid form but the powdered form looks red. It is believed that in the early days the indigenous Carib Indians used roucou to add color to their skin maybe during religious ceremonies or simply to look fierce or they simply thought that is looked good (who knows?) - we can only speculate now.
The roucou is very interesting and it look like apart from the natural red dye occurring in the plan there appears to be medicinal substances derived from the plant. In some places in the world snake anti-venom is being researched from extracts of the plant. The substance that makes the roucou red is called Bixin or Anatto and as mentioned before is used to color food or even as a body paint.
The roucou plant has been in Trinidad long before Columbus visited the country and was used by the indigenous people as body paint. I don't know if they used it in their food but residents of Trinidad and people around the world have used the plant in similar fashion. In Trinidad and Tobago the plant is used to create food coloring but has many other uses around the world. I do hope that this short article reminded you of the roucou tree that probably grew in your back yard. Please don't hesitate to leave a comment if you recall using roucou as a child or as an adult.
I have a link for the site Simply Trini Cooking with step by step guide to making your very own Roucou food coloring.
